Take a walk, discover the past at natural history preserve
by Rachel Henyan, feature editor
Lubbock Lake Landmark offers entertainment and knowledge to people of all
ages.
Lubbock Lake Landmark, a unit of the Museum of Texas Tech University, is a
336-acre archaeological and natural history preserve that is owned by the
Department of Texas Parks and Wildlife.
“The Landmark’s ongoing mission is to provide a research and educational
facility and to reveal and preserve both Texas and the nation’s cultural and
natural heritages,” said Deborah Bigness, manager of site operations.
The
Landmark offers year-round guided and self-guided tours, a learning center,
exhibitions, public programs, and programs for school children and teachers.
Volunteers help the Landmark with all of its day-to-day activities. The
learning center interpreters “assist education staff in the hands-on
learning center with a variety of programs and activities,” said Sue Shore,
volunteer coordinator.
Traditional craft and technology demonstrators present demonstrations and
workshops for visitors, Shore added.
The
Landmark also has a speakers bureau to provide year-round outreach programs
for the community and regional businesses and civic organizations.
Information desk and gift shop volunteers provide assistance and answer
questions about the Landmark and about Lubbock.
