Double standard no excuse for Imus
by Jerry Thomas, staff writer
In the wake of the 2007 Women’s National Championship game
between the University of Tennessee and Rutgers University,
a popular, nationally-syndicated radio talk show host
decided to comment on more than just the Rutgers’s team’s
performance, but on the appearance of players as well.
Bonds milestone will be missed
by Caroline Basile, sports editor
With San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds quickly
approaching Hank Aaron’s home run record, many people have
opted to not even watch the game.
I am one of these people.
Sadly, the stigma that the steroid
allegations have brought on Bonds have driven some
supporters away from anything involving him. I can see why,
too.
Media on lookout for disruptive coaching
by Robert Box, staff writer
We’re all familiar with watching ESPN and catching a
football coach or a baseball manager going off in the
post-game interview.
The initial opinion of the general
public is usually one of the manager or coach losing control
and not being able to exhibit the discipline that they so
often preach to their players. Speaking as an observer of
many sports shows and a frequent viewer of sports websites,
I have seen many coaching tirades. I’ve even seen a few
from my high school coach first-hand, but those weren’t near
as funny as the others. I can remember my first response to
these coaches screaming at reporters on TV. Usually, I’m
thinking that they’re hilarious. For example, when Jim Mora
Sr. went off about whether the Colts could make the
playoffs, I thought it was the funniest thing I’ve ever
seen.

NBA referee not helping image
by Cody Barron, staff writer
In the last issue, I threw in my two cents about the sliding
image of the National Basketball Association.
In that article, I targeted players as
the source of the league’s problems. However, NBA referee
Joe Crawford only added to the unprofessional image of the
most popular professional basketball league in the world.
Early NASCAR season brings questions
by Brant Thurmond, staff writer
Following the running of the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor
Speedway on April 15, Dale Earnhardt Jr. brought many
questions to the NASCAR world.
For those who don’t know by now, Dale
Jr. drove the No. 5 car of Kyle Bush for the last 10 laps of
the Samsung 500, receiving three extra driver points.
Gillispie looks to future
by Jerry Thomas, staff writer
From Abilene, Texas to Lexington, Kentucky, Billy Gillispie
has had many coaching stops in his career. But none are like
the job he just accepted.
Gillispie, who was a former assistant
coach for South Plains College men’s basketball, was named
the head coach of the University of Kentucky men’s
basketball team on April 6, less than two weeks after the
resignation of Tubby Smith. |
