Reception for Women Leaders

Ray Buffington, editor-in-chief

South Plains College’s Professional Advancement Club will be hosting a reception for all community leaders on Sept. 27. The reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the foyer of the Library on he Levelland Campus.

Dr Cheryl T. Sparks, President of Howard College, and Marie Ethridge, a member of the Board of Regents at Howard College in Big Spring, will be the special guest speakers.

The reception will honor the women who are community leaders in their college district, and will thank them for their support and interest in the college. This is the first time PAC has hosted an event that was directly for women in leadership.

Formed more than two years ago, PAC is an organization of employees at SPC who are interested in the pursuit of excellence and diversity in leadership and equal opportunities for professional advancement. The club sponsored two other receptions in the fall of 2004, one for Nancy Neal, a Lubbock resident who is on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and one for Senator Robert Duncan.

Since 1992, Dr. Sparks has served as president of Howard College. In addition to serving as president of the college, she once served as the president of the Big Spring Chamber of Commerce and as chair of the Board for Scenic Mountain Hospital. She also holds a doctoral degree in higher education administration.

Dr. Sparks and Ethridge, secretary/treasurer for the Howard College Board, will be discussing the challenges and rewards of leadership.
