The National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics
recently awarded SPC’s Joe Tubb the General Sports TURF
system Athletic Director of the Year.
Tubb was honored AD of the Year by the
Junior/Community College West Region. A reception was held
for Tubb on June 28 in the T-Club Lounge at Texan Dome.
Awards were received during the James
J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDA’s 41st Annual
Convention at the New Orleans Marriot at Sheraton.
Mike Cleary, Executive Director of the
NACDA said the ADOY Award is essential because it highlights
the efforts of athletics directors at all levels of their
community and positive contributions to campuses and their
surrounding communities.
“Our Honors and Awards Committee
recognized a need for an award such as the AD of the Year,”
said Cleary.
Currently serving in his 23rd
year as athletic director at South Plains College, Tubb’s
duties include supervising all sports programs and
coordinating other activities specifically designed to
promote athletics at the college. He also oversees
operations of the Texan Dome, the intramural and
recreational sports program and Texas High School University
Interscholastic League events hosted by the college.
With Tubb at the helm, the SPC track
teams have won a combined seven national titles. The Lad
Texans and Texans basketball teams have won the WJCAC title
a combined eight times. Both have won the Region V
tournament en route to the NJCAA National Tournament five
times. South Plains College has also hosted six National
Championship events, most recently the 2005 NJCAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships.
Since 1983, almost 90 percent of SPC
athletes with scholarships have graduated and an even higher
percentage have moved on to four-year colleges or
universities. Tubb gives most of the credit to the high
quality of coaches that SPC has been able to attract and to
ASAP (Assistance for Student Athlete Program) that was
installed over the years.
Tubb was on the men’s intercollegiate
golf team under head coach Bill Powell as a student at SPC
during the 1966-67 school years. He transferred to West
Texas State where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Mathematics with a minor in physical education. He then
earned his Master’s degree in physical education from Sul
Ross State University in 1981. Tubb was selected as an
Outstanding Young Man of America. He then returned to his
alma mater as Director of Athletics in 1983 after a 12- year
career as a high school coach and teacher.
Tubb is also a lifelong member of the
Texas High School Coach association and a former member of
the basketball Advisory committee. He also has served as
Region Director of NJCAA Region V since 1999 and has been a
member of the National Association of Two- Year College
Athletic Administrators since 1989. He has been on the
NATYCAA board since 2001
