Life's Not a Beach: TV "OC" Washed Away by Real OC

Debra Guerrero, staff writer

Although I enjoy watching the latest television show, “The OC,” it does not convey how the people of Orange County really live.

Television’s “Orange County” is conveyed as a place where everyone lives in huge mansions on hilltops, wear the latest fashions and drives the latest Mercedes-Benz or BMW. Writing from my experiences living in Orange County, I am here to say that this is not the way everyone lives.

There are malls, but not too many people are walking around in Dolce and Gabanna, or walking around along the beach with boots on. It’s only presented on television to catch the eye of the audience.

There are people with nice cars, but mostly people drive cars that are more along the line of Escalades or Mustangs.  Don’t get me wrong; some people do live glamorous lives. However, the entire population of Orange County is not like that. Most people are just like others around the United States.

Despite these differences, there are some similarities between the two. The beaches shown on television are exactly the same as they are in the real Orange County. Another similarity is the drama that goes on between friends. But I know that no matter where you go, there is drama everywhere, not just in the OC.

Personally, I prefer to live at home in the real OC rather than the OC portrayed on television.
