"Just getting by" College requires more than 'just enough'
by Ray Buffington, editor-in-chief
Paying the
minimum on your almost-maxed-out credit card bill (I still
regret the day I entered Buckle’s outlet store armed with a
Mastercard), working only 40 hours a week even though there
is a pile of paperwork left to do when the weekend comes
(All that data entry can wait… it’s Friday!), just having
the oil changed on your car while it is making a suspicious
rattling sound in the engine (Hey, it still runs, right?),
skipping a shower and only slathering on a good layer of
deodorant because you are late to class (Thank God for
cologne), and living off crackers and Ramen because you
haven’t been to the grocery store yet (I needed to lose a
pound or two anyway).
Rules of engagement Groom's guide for survival
by Jacob Tucker, associate editor
When a guy decides to make the decision
to date a girl, they begin a cycle of events that lead to
two things, marriage or a quick break-up.
The quick break-up usually is
instigated by a guy when he feels that the relationship is
getting too serious too fast. The girl in the relationship
can do the same. Marriage only comes when the guy pops the
question to the girl. There are a few cases whem the
question is popped by the girl, but they usually leave it up
to the guy, because it is the ‘right’ way to do it. That is
another story for another time.
You will be American... & you will like it
by Jon Seaborn, opinion editor
Propaganda has ruled the airwaves in
the weeks leading up to and falling September 11 this year.
Yes, I call it September 11, and not 9-11, because that
would be giving that day a name, which would be one step
away from making the day itself a piece of American
propaganda.
Pluto kicked out, downgraded
by Jacob Tucker, associate editor
A month ago, the planetary world was
turned upside down.
On Aug. 24, the International
Astronomical Union decided, by a show of hands, to kick
Pluto out of our known solar system. It has now been
re-classified as a ‘dwarf planet.’
Oh, snap!
Loss of teenage life hits alarming
rate for Lubbock County
by Ameila Gonzales, co-news editor
Turning on the news each night seems to
have been an excruciating ordeal for the past month.
Funerals from one end of Lubbock County
to the other have been held for nearly a half dozen high
school students. Each time I hear about another fatal car
wreck, I scan the TV screen to make sure I don’t recognize
any of the cars. My heart drops each time I realize the kids
will never have the opportunities I was lucky to have
throughout my life.
Take time to thank those who inspire
by Jennifer Conlee, feature editor
In everybody’s life, there is that one
teacher who makes them be more than they should be, or
thought they could be.
For many, it was an actual teacher. For
some, it was that bully in elementary school, or a parent
who told them that they would either amount to nothing, or
could be anything that they wanted to be.
With freedom comes responsibility
by Isa Torres, staff writer
Three Christians were supposed to be
killed in Indonesia recently because they received the death
penalty for instigating and participating in a fight between
Christians and Muslims, which resulted in the death of 122
Muslims who were hiding in an orphanage six years ago.
Although their punishment was postponed
because of the numerous calls to the embassies of Indonesia,
this kind of goes with what Pope Benedict XVI said about
Islam recently when he was in Bavaria. While quoting an
emperor from the 14th century, he said, "Show me
just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will
find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to
spread by the sword the faith he preached."
Back off my rights
by Sawyer Thomas, staff writer
At a school where learning is as
difficult as performing triple bypass surgery, at least for
me, I’ve come to wonder if people are actually questioning
themselves on today’s issues and finding answers and
representing themselves in today’s political climate.
I think that if people seriously
thought about all of their pent-up questions and concerns on
issues such as abortion, gay marriage and others, they would
truly come to question whether or not they are being
completely fair human beings.
Maines opens mouth, inserts foot... again
by Stephanie Perez, staff writer
It seems that
Lubbock’s little rebel, Natalie Maines, has put her foot in
her mouth once again.
The first time
she suffered from the foot-in-mouth syndrome, she said at a
concert in London that she was embarrassed that the
president is from Texas. She recently made a comment in a
documentary about the Dixie Chick’s latest CD and tour that
was released at a Toronto film festival. In the documentary,
she said, “When you live in a small town like Lubbock, where
I’m from, and you only have one newspaper and one radio
station, you have to be Internet savvy to know what is going
on. If the president said to get a gun and kill Arabs, then
they would.”
