Mohawks making return in style

by Robert Box, staff-writer

A new era in football has been born - the era of the Mohawk.

The crazy hairstyle has been reborn and is spreading across the nation.  Well, a few players are sporting one at least.

Tom Zbikowski is the starting free safety for the Norte Dame Fighting Irish.  Against Penn State a few weeks ago he helped the Irish to a win by recovering a fumble and running it back 25 yards for a touchdown.  He also made his professional boxing debut this summer, knocking out his opponent, Robert Bell, in 49 seconds.

But what makes him truly brave, is it his ability to let someone punch him in the face, or him running full speed to throw his body into someone to tackle the opposing player?  No, it’s his ability to sport the Mohawk as his hairstyle.  That is true fearlessness.  Now many of the little boys in Indiana are sporting the hairstyle as their own.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have several players sporting the look.  Quarterback Bobby Reid, defensive end Victor Degrate, and receiver Adarius Bowman all have their hair cut.

“That showed some togetherness and cohesiveness among the group, because I can’t imagine a guy just wanting to give himself a Mohawk,”  said head coach Mike Gundy in an ESPN.com interview.  I’ll tell you what coach, it might show togetherness and cohesiveness, but in my book, it also shows style.

The ‘Hawk is also showing up in the pros.  Washington Redskins’ running back Clinton Portis sported a red Mohawk for his season-opener against the Minnesota Vikings.  Portis would have gotten more attention for his hair if he wouldn’t have been injured for the beginning of the season, and if another player, who is known for getting attention, wouldn’t have gotten the same cut.

Chad Johnson is a Pro Bowl receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals and is known for his hilarious touchdown celebrations and the gold teeth that he wears for every game.  But now he is known for another reason… his hair.  Johnson now sports a blonde Mohawk for every game.  Fans can now even buy a rubber scalp with a blond Mohawk to wear during the game.  This just shows how the style is spreading at a rapid rate.

It is just a matter of time before the Mohawk takes over.  You will start seeing it everywhere, and in every sport.  I’ve already seen one on campus.  After the Mohawk takes over, the greatest hairstyle ever will start taking its place.  That’s right, the mullet is soon to follow.  So prepare yourselves, and join the Mohawk revolution.
