Play, practice planned for Moonlight Madness

by Brant Thurmond, staff writer

Free food, contests, and the introduction of the men’s and women’s basketball teams highlight plans for Moonlight Madness at South Plains College.

Moonlight Madness will be held from 5 p.m to 11 p.m on October 2. There will be free food for everyone who goes. Hot dogs will be served at the Intramural Field, located on the south side of the Smallwood Apartments. The event is open to the public.

Many contests will be held from 7 p.m to 10 p.m. Contests vary from dodge ball, free- throw shooting, 3-point shootout, and slam-dunk contests, to bench press contests, bowling strike out and golf putting contests.

Entertainment for the night includes performances by the Texan Cheerleaders and the SPC ensemble “ Thursday Night Live.” Students will get a chance to meet the basketball teams and enjoy the live music.

“This is a good opportunity for the students to meet our basketball teams, have some fun and eat some good food,” said SPC athletic director Joe Tubb.

“We hope a lot of our students will come out and help us kick off our basketball season.”

The Texan basketball team finished 24-8 overall and third in the Western Junior Athletic College Conference last season. They advanced to the semifinals of the Region V tournament and return five players from that team, including Steven Harley, who averaged more than 20 points a game and was named NJCAA All- American last year.
