Lemer convicted in student's murder

The case of murdered South Plains College student Bradford
McIver drew to a close recently with the conviction of the
man who killed him.
On Sept. 11, Nathan Lemer, 21, plead guilty to the charge of
murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison, with the
possibility of parole. The arrest warrant indicated that
robbery was Lemer’s motive for the crime.
Presidency, electoral college focus of Constitution Day by Jason Hartline, staff writer
Three members of the South Plains College Social Science
Department celebrated the birth of our government with a
discussion of the United States Constitution and the 2008
presidential election.
The event, conducted on Sept. 19, was
hosted by Larry Norris, associate professor of government,
Michael Smith, instructor of government, and Dr. Ron Carden,
professor of history and chairperson of the Social Sciences
Department. Numerous faculty members and students attended
the Constitution Day observance.
Plainsman Press celebrates 50th year

Plains College's award-winning student newspaper, the
Plainsman Press, is celebrating its 50th year with this
issue.
Originally called The Plainsman,
the paper began delivering news to students and faculty on
Oct. 15, 1958, when the college first opened. It has had a
rich history within the walls of its newsroom. It was first
published inside the Levelland Daily Sun News. The
paper began its run by publishing stories focused on SPC
sports, enrollment, and faculty news, among other news
items.
Students participate in minority grant program

Twelve students at South Plains College are the first to
participate in the Plains Bridges to the Baccalaureate
program.
The program, a partnership between SPC
and Texas Tech University is the fruit from a $1.08 million,
five-year grant that will be used to encourage and support
minority undergraduate students interested in the biomedical
sciences. It began with the fall semester.
Voter registration cutoff date slated for Oct. 6

With the 2008 Presidential and General elections around the
corner, many South Plains College students are preparing to
vote for the first time in their lives. One of the first
steps in voting is registering before the deadline, Oct. 6.
Allied Health Day to be held at Reese Center on Oct. 2

South Plains
College’s Reese Center campus will be the site for the
second annual Allied Health Day on Oct. 2.
The event is
set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Building 5 on the Reese Center
campus. The program, which began last year, is expected to
attract 300 students from area high schools to participate
in the day-long events.
