Top four funny things I've seen lately

by Ray Buffington, editor-in-chief

That’s correct ladies and gentlemen! Because of all the encouraging, laughter-filled responses I received from the last edition of “Top Five…”, I bring to you another round of ridiculous, and usually hilarious, events that have occurred in my presence in the past few months and have left a somewhat lasting impression in my memory. Unfortunately, I have had to cut this segment down to the “Top Four…” for the world has failed to give me ample material to mock. I hope you enjoy!

Vernal vengeance: Increased number of school shootings has nation's youth on edge

by Jacob Tucker, associate editor

Violence is being seen worldwide.

We see it every day on the news, in our television shows, in movies, in music, and in video games.  We are not only seeing violence through these mediums, but we are seeing it become more and more prevalent in our school systems.

Try to help... Whether they like it or not

by Amelia Gonzales, co-news editor

This past summer, I witnessed something that I can’t seem to stop replaying in my mind.

It was a Friday night, and my boyfriend and I were driving over to a friend’s house. It was pretty late, so the streets were not busy but the parking lots to all the bars were full. As we pulled up to a corner light, I looked across into a car dealership and noticed that a man was beating on a woman. The woman managed to stand up, and it was then that I noticed she was pregnant and very far into her pregnancy at that. The man raised his arm back up and slapped her with so much force that the woman fell right back down.

We are contagious

by Robert Box, staff writer

This is a story that I have wanted to do since I joined the paper this year.  It came to me while I was in church one day, and I was sitting next to my friend, Jacqui (Streety) Gilmer.

Jacqui was this paper’s former editor-in-chief and was the editor when this paper was selected as the best overall newspaper in the state in its division less than two years ago.  I’ve known Jacqui since she was in high school, and I can remember her writing for this paper.

Computer addiction affects school, work, socializing

by Jonathan Kay, staff writer

You are an addict, and you don’t even know it!

Computer use in this day and age has hit an all-time high. Computer use now goes way beyond the office; it has become a major source of entertainment and fun for many people.

When there's nowhere else to turn ... Look up

by Isa Torres, staff writer

Sadly, our world is not perfect.

Sadly, we are full of imperfections, and the worst part of this is that there is no way we can correct ourselves. Many people try to forget about the problems they face by trying to avoid anything that tells them they’re wrong.

Destination unknown: Leaving loved ones to serve your country

by Jennifer Conlee, feature editor

Something has recently happened in my life that’s made me think a lot about what is going on in the world.

However, before I tell about this event, I want to create a scenario.

Imagine that it is really early in the morning.  You wake up, dress comfortably, and grab the small bag you packed the night before.  You don’t have to take much with you.  After all, most of your things will be sent home soon.

Losing a war, planning a party

by Jonathan Seaborn, opinion editor

America is involved in a war that seems to have no end in sight.

With the number of troops being sent over seas growing every day, and top Generals now saying that even larger numbers of troops are needed because to a civil war might break out, it doesn’t really look like we are winning anything. Yet, Congress is now ready to throw a $20 million “victory” party if and when we win the war.

Too much TV can be detrimental to classroom success

by Hope Perez, staff writer

Finally, there is vindication for all parents who have ever uttered the words, “Turn off the television; it is a school night,” and had their children groan and complain about not being allowed to watch television because it was a school night.

In the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal newspaper recently and later on the nightly news, I came across a story that gave the findings for a survey that can finally pinpoint side effects that hurt our school-age children who watch television and play video games during school nights.

Parking tickets lead to mounting frustration

by Omar Ojeda, staff writer

My opinion for this issue is written out after frustration and anger.

Probably a lot of other students on campus can relate to it too.

I recently, without having counted them, received my fifth and final parking ticket. Apparently, the maximum number of tickets any student can receive is five before they are sent a written notice to contact the Dean of Students to schedule an appointment about the matter. This seems very stupid to me, and probably to the majority of the campus as well

Unresolved problems still haunt humanity

by Sawyer Thomas, staff writer

As I sat down to write this opinion piece, I thought to myself, I really don’t know what to write about raise questions on our South Plains campus.

I’ve done the gay issue.  It’s like I can’t even imagine to myself, what I would write if I couldn’t write something to make people think.  So I couldn’t help but wonder, what do I write about when I’m trying to keep some of the controversy going?
