Former student killed in Afghanistan

The South Plains recently lost a hero.
Mark Russell Cannon, a hospital
corpsman 3rd class in the United States Navy and
a native of Lubbock, was killed in Afghanistan on Oct. 2. He
was 31.
Regents discuss new training program, freeport exemption

A new program to improve intercommunications within South
Plains College was introduced at the October meeting of the
SPC Board of Regents.
After reviewing the bi-annual faculty
survey, it was determined that SPC employees feel that there
is not enough communication between departments. To correct
this barrier, LeadSPC was created. This is a new
supervisor-training program, which is being developed by the
Institutional Committee.
Friends, faculty saddened by Tobin's passing

Current South Plains students recently were taken aback when
hearing that their classmate Dave Tobin had passed away.
Tobin
passed away on Sept. 28, with his television on, relaxed in
his recliner. A good friend named P.J Welch-Liggin who was
in Tobin’s band called Roan Inish, found him the next
morning when he missed a Friday night gig, which was
exceptionally strange for Tobin.
Demonstrations, tours highlight first Allied Health Day

Tours, mock demonstrations, and the signing of a
proclamation were among the highlights of the first Allied
Health Day at South Plains College’s Reese Center Campus.
The first demonstration was from the
Surgical Technology students. They performed a hysterectomy
on a surgical dummy.
SPC hosting Tech Prep Career Expo

South Plains College is hosting the Tech Prep Career Expo on
Oct. 17.
The purpose of the event is to help high school students
learn about the different careers available for them. The
event will start from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lubbock
Memorial Civic Center Exhibit Hall.
Pam Moore, assistant director of Tech Prep, said that they
are expecting 3,000 high school students from the Hockley
County and the Lubbock school districts.
“Tech Prep Expo will expose high school juniors and seniors
to what their education opportunities are,” said Moore.
College reps set dates to visit with transfer students

South Plains College students planning to transfer to a
four-year college or university will have several
opportunities to visit with representatives of some of those
institutions this semester.
Representatives from Texas Tech
University, Texas A&M University, West Texas A&M University,
and Lubbock Christian University will be making stops at the
Levelland and Reese Center campuses to talk to students
interested in transferring to their schools. On Oct. 31, a
representative from WT A&M will be in the Student Services
mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
