Rodeo team finds success at Sul Ross, Weatherford

Freshman Cassie Vierstra of Twin Falls, Idaho, was named
All-Around cowgirl at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo on
Oct. 6.
She placed first in the goat tying
competition with a total time of 14.5, ranking her No. 1 in
the Southwest Region with a 275 total. Dana Weiser of
Wheatland, Wyo., also made it to the final and placed ninth
with a total of 17.3.
Freshman Ryan Shanklin of Rocksprings
placed first in bull riding with the high score in the first
round, compiling 166 points
In tie down roping, Matt Switzer of
Swift Current, Saskatchawan, Canada placed third with a
total time of 17.8, and Tyrell Sparkman of Hereford finished
10th with a time of 28.9.
Ginger Hathcock of Colorado Springs,
Colo, placed sixth in barrel racing with a total time of
32.72. In team roping, Will Beahm and Vierstra teamed up to
advance to the final round and took seventh with a time of
32.72.
The SPC Women’s Rodeo team is currently
ranked sixth in the region. Vierstra ranks first in goat
tying and break away roping, while Hathcock is ranked No. 13
in barrel racing. The men’s team is ranked No. 14 in the
Southwest Region. Ross Cooper is 13th in bull
riding, while Shanklin is ranked fourth in bull riding.
Brian Johnson of Gruver is fourth, and Switzer is sixth in
tie-down roping. Chase Massengill of Santa Fe, N. M. is
ranked 12th in tie down roping.
The South Plains College rodeo teams
also had success at the Weatherford rodeo on Sept. 27-28.
Vierstra placed first in the Break Away
Roping, with an impressive overall time of 6.0.
In the tie-down roping competition,
Massengill finished fourth. Massengill had a time of 10.3
seconds in the first round and had the third-fastest time of
9.2 seconds in the short round, giving him a total time of
19.5. Also, Jarred Sharp of Dayton, Oka. finished seventh,
with a total time 21.1.
In the goat-tying competition, Kelcy
Ward of Ocala, Fla., finished ninth with a total time of
20.7, while Vierstra finished 10th with a total
time of 23.2.
In barrel racing, Hathcock of Colorado
Springs, Colo., finished seventh with a total time of 34.87.
Also, in the bull riding competition, Stewart Kinley of
Gladstone, Manitoba, Canada, scored a 73, but received no
score in the short round.
The rodeo teams were back in action
Oct. 13, competing at the Vernon rodeo. Results were not
available at press time.
