Regents discuss future residence halls

A proposal for the construction of new residence halls and
the television commercial advertising budget were among the
main issues discussed during the October meeting of the
South Plains College Board of Regents.
South Plains College is looking to
construct new residence halls, or add on to existing
facilities on the Levelland campus. These new buildings will
offer a chance to house new students and increase the
on-campus population.
Florida college visits English Department by Shelbi Wallace, online editor
The Developmental English program at South Plains College
has been recognized for its efforts and hard work.
Tallahassee Community College in
Florida took notice of the program and decided to further
investigate SPC’s efforts. TCC’s faculty and administrators
contacted Dr. Mike Felker, who was the chairperson of the
English Department at the time and professor of English,
regarding the success of SPC’s program.
SPC, LCU add secondary education degree

Lubbock Christian University and South Plains College
recently signed an articulation agreement to create an
Associate of Arts in Teaching degree in secondary education.
The
agreement between the two schools was signed on Sept. 29,
and is the first of its kind for both LCU and SPC, according
to Yancy Nunez, dean of arts and sciences at SPC.
“We wanted
to give students who want to teach at the high school level
the option of getting their credentials in the field they
want, as well as the education degree,” said Nunez.
Tours, mock demonstrations, speaker make Allied Health Day
successful

Thirteen schools in the surrounding area and 243 high school
students experienced hands-on demonstrations from each
department in the Allied Health Program during the second
annual Allied Health Day at the South Plains College Reese
Center Campus.
Plainsman Press receives recognition at TCCJA

At the recent fall convention of the Texas Community College
Journalism Association, the staff the Plainsman Press, South
Plains College’s student newspaper, received several awards
for their efforts from the past year.
'Opening Doors' to encourage enrollment

South Plains College is hosting a bilingual workshop,
“Opening Doors/Abriendo Puertas,” that invites families from
the surrounding communities gain a better understanding of
the essentials needed for high school students to enter
college.
Career Expo set for Oct. 14

South Plains College Tech Prep will
host the Career Expo from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 14 at
the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.
The Expo will expose high school
juniors and seniors to various educational and career
opportunities available in the region.
