College says “bienvenidos” to local high school students for
the annual Foreign Language Festival.
The festival will be held on
Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to 3p.m. Students from local high schools
such as Dimmit, Friona, Levelland, Muleshoe, and New Deal will
be among those participating. They will be competing in
various events to test their foreign language skills.
There are 12 events,
including, broadcasting, written tests, sight-reading, skits,
puppets, and folklore dance.
Approximately
400 students and sponsors will be attending this year. There
will also be 93 student volunteers from SPC ‘s Levelland
campus, Reese center, and Texas Tech University.
“I want the students to have
the experience of competing and doing well,” said Dr. Valerie
Job, professor of Spanish at SPC and coordinator of the
festival. “ I want them to meet new people and see how similar
and unique they are.”
The events will be held at
various locations on the Levelland campus. The folklore dance
will be in the PE Complex. At the end of the day, the judges
will unanimously choose three of the best folklore dances and
two of the best skits. Then they will have an encore
performance at 2:15 p.m.
“I want them to be on a
college campus,” Dr. Job said. “ I want them to say, Oh my
god, I can really go here. It’s not too big that it’s
intimidating, and I like them to have that feel of, wow, this
is how it feels to be at a college.”
All are welcomed to attend
the festival.
