Blitzen Trapper's 'Furr' sure to ensnare new listeners

by Thomas Mooney, staff writer

“Furr” is the fourth studio album by semi-bearded mountain men from Oregon known as Blitzen Trapper.

It might seem that there is some kind of time machine located in the great northwest that is bringing back obscure Neil Young cover bands. But I assure you that these bands are from the 21st century. Although it’s 2008, Blitzen Trapper still plays like they are part of the folk movement of the early 1960s.

Man Man's 'Rabbit Habbits' captures live performance feel

by Thomas Mooney, staff writer

Man Man is an explosion of sound.

They have been labeled everything from the super-detailed “Viking-vaudeville, manic gypsy jazz,” to simply being classified as art rock or experimental indie-rock.

'The Women' portrays broad friendship qualities

by Lisa Hernandez, staff writer

Annette Bening leads an all-star cast in "The Women."

This movie is the ultimate chick flick about the power of friendship and having the strength to carry on, even when things go wrong.

Calexico blends genres with new album

by Thomas Mooney, staff writer

To describe Calexico in one word is impossible.

They are able to fuse Afro-Peruvian music, early country, surf rock, ‘50s and ‘60s jazz, folk, as well as traditional Latin-influenced music, into what I would consider the ultimate Southwestern experience.

'Dreamer' proves lyrically emotional

by Tausha Rosen, staff writer

Haste the Day is not a band for the faint-hearted.

Since 2001, this hardcore group has rocked the underground stage, and is now performing for audiences across the country. Their latest album, “Dreamer,” was released Oct. 14.

Jenny Lewis gets 'A' for effort

by Thomas Mooney, staff writer

On “Acid Tongue,” Jenny Lewis elaborates on the pop-rock sound she is known for.

But she experiments more often on songs, diving into the unknown waters of gospel, early country, and soul.
