Face2Face worships with indie rock

by Priscilla Casanova, staff writer

Whether they make it big in the music business or not, Face2Face will have already made it big in God’s eyes and in the eyes of thousands of believers all over Texas.

All members of the band attend Emmanuel Worship Center in Lubbock.   They got their start around three years ago at a youth conference, which is where they got their name, Face2Face.   They are a very close group. Members include: Edward Rivera, lead vocals; Ishmael “Lay low” Rivera, acoustic guitar; Josiel “Oz” Cavazos, drums; Joe Cavazos, lead guitar ;Jaime Arroyo, keyboard ; and Jason Davila, background effects.   Edward and Ishmael are brothers, and Joe is their brother-in-law.  Josiel is Joe’s brother, so they are all very close knit, all brothers in Christ.

“Our music could be called Indie Rock” says Edward, “It’s rock, but not rock that hurts your ears. Modern Worship, that’s the category I would put it under.”

They started off playing cover music from other contemporary Christian artists, but have recently started recording their own tracks.  They have around 16 original songs which they are saving for their first CD.  The title and release date for that album has yet to be determined, although they will be recording a live CD of cover songs around the Thanksgiving holiday. This recording will be held in Houston, at the GLAD youth conference. They are expecting anywhere from 9,000-10,000 people to attend the show.

They have traveled all over Texas to different churches sharing the love of God, and the talent He has blessed them with.

“We have gone out around 25 times this year and have turned down 42 invitations,” says Edward Rivera, the lead vocalist and founder of the group.  “We travel when the opportunity is there.  All the guys have full time jobs.”

They do what they can for Christ, in his name, with all their hearts.

“F2F is a high-energy band based out of Lubbock. The band consists of seven God-fearing, down- to- earth guys who unite to do what they love to do most, that is to worship God enthusiastically through music. Their dynamic style of worship can be easily portrayed as a passion and a hunger to do more for God, through God and with God.” As stated on their Myspace webpage.

Fifteen minutes with “Oz”, the Drummer for Face2Face….

P: What made you decide to join the band?

O: When they started putting the band together they needed a drummer, so my brother (Joe) suggested that they ask me. So that’s how it happened.

Plainsman Press: So how long have you played with the band Face2Face?

Oz: umm, around three, three or four years.

Plainsman Press: How long have you played the drums?

Oz:  I would say six years or so

Plainsman Press:  How would you describe the type of music that you all play?

O: I say it’s uh, a soft rock. We try to mix in a little bit of everything.  A little bit of punkish, a little bit of rockish, and a little bit of ….God…a lotta bit of God.

Plainsman Press: Do you like playing cover songs?

Oz: I like the cover songs.  It’s cool. I think, that’s what we started playing, that’s how it got to where we are, by doing those songs. But now we’ve got our own stuff.  I like it. It’s cool. We actually have our own songs that we can sing, and people can sing our songs.

Plainsman Press: If you could play any other instrument what would it be?

Oz: I do play every other instrument….

Plainsman Press: Really?! What other instruments do you play?

Oz: Nah, I’m just kidding. If I could play any other instrument it would probably be the guitar.

Plainsman Press: Why?

Oz: Cause it’s easier to sing along with than the drums…You can’t really lead a song playing drums…

Plainsman Press: But you can’t really have a cool band without the drums.

Oz: Unless you’re a solo folk singer…

Plainsman Press: Which you want to be??

Oz: Kind of….not really (laughs)….
