editor
Herb thought he left his daughter, Libby,
behind years ago. Now she is at his Hollywood doorstep, trying
to reconnect with her father with just a single backpack and a
New York accent.
The South Plains College theatre program
has taken on this serious production, “ I Ought to be in
Pictures.” The comedy “ Blithe Spirit “ set the stage,
literally, for an amazing display of skill that is reflected
in their recent undertaking.
“ I Ought to be in Pictures” will hit the
stage at 7:30 on Nov. 16-18 and at 2pm on Nov. 19.
Performances will be in the Theatre for the Performing Arts in
the Fine Arts Building.
“ I Ought to be in Pictures” is the story
of a struggling screenwriter who is suddenly surprised by an
unwelcome visit of his daughter, Libby, who he left years
before. Libby traveled all the way across the nation to see
her father and found herself in a complicated situation. Her
father lives a life of gambling and booze, but with Libby’s
return, Herb is forced to face his past.
Neil Simon’s story of an unlikely family
reunion is full of drama and emotion as Libby and Herb
struggle to gain each other’s acceptance.
Emily Darwin, who plays Libby, gives the
story a sense of realism with her very accurate New York
accent. James Graham, who not only looks the part but also
fully stays in character, plays Herb.
Michal Blackburn, who successfully pulled
off the huge role of Madame Arcati in “Blithe Spirit”, has a
reverse character as the loyal and simple girlfriend of Herb.
These roles offer a great opportunity for these actresses and
actor to show an array of skill and talent, along with range.
Gene Cole,
the assistant professor of
Theatre Arts, serves
as the director, and Joanie Harrell will serve as assistant
director and stage manager. Graham will also serve as the set
designer. Mandy Lindsey and Amanda Seifert will be serve as
the costume designers. Tim Cummings will serve as the light
board operator, and Ashton Suter will serve as the sound
engineer. Ruth Cunningham is serving as the Box Office
Manager.
Besides the heart-warming sequence of
events and a plot that is easy to relate to, “ I Ought to be
in Pictures” has a cast that is easily able to bring this
beautiful story to life.
