Expect unexpected for remainder of NFL season

Here we are, about halfway through the football season, and everyone is ready to start thinking playoffs.

With only about seven or eight games already played, aren’t we forgetting something? That’s right, the rest of the season.

Earnhardt leaves No. 8 in his rear view

As I was recently watching ESPN, I found out that Dale Earnhardt Jr. would no longer drive the number 8 car.

In case you don’t know, Junior announced earlier in the year that he would not be driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2008. He announced he would be driving for Hendrick Motorsports.

Texans open season with pair of victories

After falling just one game short of a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament, the South Plains College Texans knew it was important to begin this season on a winning note.

The 20th-ranked Texans traveled to Houston to take on Blinn College in the opening round of the San Jacinto Classic on Nov. 2. 

 

Fan loyalties only skin deep

I was once again enjoying watching my Dallas Cowboys win a game against the Philadelphia Eagles when Terrell Owens once again made waves in the media for his comments after the game.

This was only the second time that Owens would be back in Philadelphia after being kicked off the team in 2005.

Brady outshines Manning in showdown

With a player-by-player presentation that read like a future Hall of Fame introduction class, the game of the century was not short on hype.

But did it live up to the lofty expectations? We heard it called the game of the century, battle of the unbeatens, and even Super Bowl 41 and a half. The last title made the assumption that one of these two teams would be winning the big game in February.

Cross Country teams advance to nationals

South Plains College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will be headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s National Championship meet after strong performances at the NJCAA Region V championship.

Both squads were to conclude their season by competing Nov. 10 at Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill. Results were not available at press time.

Lady Texans begin season with victories

The South Plains College Lady Texans opened their season with an easy 111-63 victory against Colby (KS) Community College at the Breakfast Rotary Classic in Levelland. 

The Lady Texans hit 14 3-pointers and shot 61 percent from beyond the arc, setting a new school record for 3-pointers made.

SPC rodeo teams finish with success

The South Plains College rodeo team finished the fall season with more success at the Texas Tech Rodeo.

Cassie Vierstra, a freshman from Twin Falls, Idaho, led the way again, placing first in goat tying with a total time of 16.2.            

New records mean new era for NFL

Looking through some of the records in the NFL, many have been surpassed or on pace to be passed.

Players presently playing seem to break records held by former players. Every week, there is some kind of different record being broken or one being set. Players seem to get more athletic and versatile as years go by, making more of an impact now.

Seats start heating up for college coaches

It’s about that time of year again: college football is in full swing

While some teams are cruising through the season celebrating their success, other teams are struggling and looking for a new play-caller.  Phillip Fulmer, head coach at the University of Tennessee, said it best when he said, “The highs are high, and the lows are low in this profession.”

Bryant's trade saga continues in Los Angeles

Kobe Bryant has demanded a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers for some time now, but the organization has refused to listen.

But now Lakers owner Jerry Buss has stated he is willing to listen to trade talks. Bryant, 29, stunned the basketball world on May 30 by bluntly declaring his dissatisfaction with the Lakers and demanding to be traded.
