New Degree Plans, Certifications Offered

South Plains College has added several new plans for certifications and new degrees programs to help students in their career paths.

The college will offer two new Associate of Arts degrees, one in corporate-organizational communications and one in fourth-to-eighth-grade education.  Dr. Jay Driver, dean of arts and sciences at SPC, said expanding educational opportunities is responsive to the college’s mission.

Symphonic Bands Sets December 8 Performance

The South Plains College Symphonic Band will be performing on Dec. 8 at the Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Ex Student Returns as New Recruiter

The Office of Enrollment Management at South Plain College has hired a former student to serve as the new recruiter.

Julie Golson, a 2005 graduate of SPC, took over the position on Aug. 29, the first day of classes for the fall 2005 semester. She was raised in Rankin, Texas and graduated from Rankin High School a year early in 2002. After graduation, Golson took her $1,000 early graduate scholarship and enrolled in South Plains College to study music.

New Director for Upward Bound

There is an old face in a new position for South Plains College’s Upward Bound Program.

Chris Riley recently as promoted as the new Upward Bound director.

Riley was the academic coordinator at SPC’s Upward Bound Program before taking the position of director, but he got his real start as in the summer instructor for Tarleton State’s Upward Bound program.

“ I had a real desire to impact people’s lives,” Riley said. “I looked at the struggles I had in college and where I had stumbled. I just want to help those with the same experience I had,” said Riley, explaining why he took the job.

Brass Choir, Percussion Ensemble Teaming for Fall Concert

The SPC Brass Choir, along with the percussion ensemble, will light up the stage with a performance on Dec. 6.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the SPC Theatre for the Performing Arts, and admission is free.
