Lady Texans upset No. 1-ranked Seward

The South Plains College Lady Texans continue to rack up the wins as the season progresses, including an upset victory against the top-ranked junior college team in the country.

On Nov. 24, the Lady Texans defeated the College of Eastern Utah 82-64 in the final game of the Colorado Northwestern Community College Classic in Rangely, Colo.

Freshman Shaniqua Henderson recorded a triple-double to lead SPC to a 7-2 record. Henderson ended up with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Brittany Blackmon added 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Mariame Djoura had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Also for the Lady Texans, Chasity Workman and McKensie East both scored eight, Krystal Davis had seven and Rachel Gray added three points.

The Lady Texans cruised to an easy 99-50 victory on Nov. 23 against Colorado Northwestern Community College.

Djoura led SPC with 22 points, while Blackmon added 19, Workman had nine, Davis scored eight, Nagado and East both scored seven, Frazier and Gray scored six, Lawless added five, Henderson had four, and Broome and Anderson both scored three.

On Nov. 16, SPC upset the No. 1 JUCO team in the nation on their homecourt. SPC beat Seward (Kan.) 69-54. The Lady Texans raced out to an early lead and never looked back. Blackmon led the way with 22 points, while Davis added 17, Frazier had 10, Workman scored seven, Henderson and Gray each added two points.

The South Plains College Lady Texans defeated Pratt (Kan.) 83-53 on Nov. 17  to finish 2-0 at the Seward County Community College Wendy’s Classic in Liberal, Kan.

Ten of the 11 players scored in the contest. Frazier, who hit five 3-pointers, finished with 15 points.  Henderson added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Blackmon scored 14.

Also for SPC, Djoura and Nagado each scored eight, Gray had seven, Lindsey Lawless had six, East added five, Workman scored four and Desiraye Broome added two points.

For the second consecutive night, SPC lost a close road game, falling to Angelina College 76-73 on Nov. 10.

Although the Lady Texans hit nine 3-pointers it, was still not enough. Blackmon and Henderson both scored 18, while Gray added 15, Frazier had 11, Djoura scored seven, and Davis and Nagado each added two points.

Less than 24 hours earlier, the Lady Texans suffered their first loss on Nov. 9. The Temple College Lady Leopards handed the Lady Texans a 64-62 setback.

Frazier led SPC with 17 points, while Henderson was close behind with 16 points.

Djoura and Blackmon finished with eight points each, while Davis dropped in seven points and Workman scored six points.

The Lady Texans begin Western Junior College Athletic Conference play on Nov. 29, taking on Frank Philips College in Borger. They return home on Dec. 3 to face Midland College at Texan Dome.
