Texan basketball players Markhuri Sanders-Frison and Hugh Mingo recently signed National Letters of Intent to continue their basketball careers with four-year universities.

Mingo, a 6-foot-3 guard from West Monroe, Louisiana, is going back home to complete his college basketball career at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Mingo averaged 6.6 points off the bench for a team that went on to win the National Championship last season. He shot 52 percent from the field, and averaged two rebounds per game.

In five games this season, Mingo has averaged 17.4 points per game, two steals and has shot an astonishing 62.5 percent from beyond the arc.

“I am excited about the opportunity to continue my basketball career and to be close to my family,” Mingo said.

Sanders-Frison, a 6-foot-8 post from Portland, Oregon, inked his scholarship agreement to play for the University of California at Berkeley.

So far this season, he has averaged 15.7 points per game. Sanders-Frison attended Eastern Arizona College before coming to SPC, averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds per game there.

Sanders-Frison said that he chose the Golden Bears because, “It is on the West Coast, close to home, and a great program.” Since transferring to South Plains College, Sanders-Frison has found it to his liking.

“I like everything about this place, especially the coaching staff and my teammates,” he said.

The Texans are 5-0 at the moment, with wins against LCU JV, Baltimore City Community College and Lon Morris. Each win has been by 20 points or more. Mingo and Sanders-Frison are making vital contributions to help the team return to NJCAA tournament.
