Lady Texans Gunning to Continue Success

A year after their most successful year ever, the South Plains College Lady Texans are battling for a repeat performance.

 The Lady Texans defeated Howard College 70-48 on Jan. 30.  SPC had a double-digit lead five minutes into the game. Howard tried fighting back, but their attempts were thwarted by SPC, which placed fourth in the nation at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in 2005.

Dominic Seals led SPC with 23 points, Fallon Thomas had 16 points and five assists, Brook DeGrate added 12 points, Alana Rumph scored 10 points, Alex Velazquez had six points and Roni Gomez added three points.

For Howard, Latoya Fairley had 14 points and Jennifer Pena added 13 points.

The Lady Texans were not so fortunate against Clarendon College on Jan. 26, dropping a 77-66 decision.

The game was tied 33-33 at halftime, but Clarendon shot 12 3-pointers to pull away.

Clarendon’s Karina Sproal finished with 26 points, and Ilona Muszak added 17 for the Lady Bulldogs.

For SPC, Seals and Thomas each scored 14 points, DeGrate added 11 points and Rumph had eight points.

The Lady Texans pounded Frank Philips College on Jan. 23 by a score of 84-70. In the first half, the two teams traded the lead for at least the first 10 minutes. The score stood at 23-23 with 5:21 remaining in the first half, but SPC quickly scored 12 consecutive points, leading 42-31 by halftime.

SPC continued with the lead in the second half. Seals converted a lay-up with the assistance of Adams, helping the Lady Texans to a 70-48 lead at the 7:16 mark. But Frank Phillips fought back using their forceful defense and strong free-throw shooting to pull within seven points.

The Lady Texans held a 22-point lead with 7:16 left in the game, but Frank Phillips fought hard, trimming the deficit to seven points with 1:43 left. SPC finished the game on a 7-0 run for the final 14-point margin.

Seals finished with 30 points and six blocked shots for SPC. Thomas chipped in 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. Adams added a season- high 18 points, while Gomez scored five points, Velazquez had four points, DeGrate scored three and Chandra Adkins added two points.

The Lady Texans struggled but fought hard to the end in their game with Odessa College on Jan. 16.

Odessa led by as many as 10 points early on, but the Lady Texans would not give in and rallied for a two-point lead in the final minutes before seeing the Lady Wranglers pull out the victory. 

Helen Roden scored 12 points for Odessa, while Twashae Peterson added 10. For SPC, Seals had 29 points and 15 rebounds, Gomez added 11 points, Thomas scored 10 points, Velazquez had seven points, DeGrate scored five points, and Adkins added one point.

SPC prevailed in its game with Glendale College in Arizona on Jan. 8, posting an  85-64 victory.  The Lady Texans led 34-27 at halftime.

SPC was led in scoring by Seals, who tossed in 24 points. Thomas and Erica Knight each added 12 points, Velazquez scored 11, Adams added nine points, Adkins had six points, DeGrate scored five points, and Holt added two points.

The Lady Texans crushed Mesa College 70-55 on Jan. 6.

SPC led by six points at halftime, but turned on the offense in the second half.

Seals paced the attack with 21 points, while Thomas added 13 points, DeGrate scored 11 points, Velazquez added nine points, Adkins had six points, Knight added four points, Gomez and Holt each had three points, and Adams added two points.

The Lady Texans began the second half of the season by downing Pima Community College, 81-47 on Jan 5. SPC jumped out to a 17- point halftime lead.

Seals led the way with 22 points, while Thomas added 12 points, DeGrate scored nine points, Knight and Gomez each had seven points, Holt and Adoms both added six points, Weatherton scored five points, Adkins pitched in with four points, and Velazquez added three points.
