EMS students will one day have to make important decisions under important pressure that will affect the lives of those they are helping.  In order to learn how to do this, they must have excellent instructors.

South Plains College has one of the best in Jim Majorowski, the basic coordinator and instructor for the EMS program at South Plains College, who received the “Outstanding EMS Person of the Year Award” at the Texas Department of State Health Services Emergency Medical Service’s Awards Luncheon on Nov. 21 in Dallas.

“It was quite surprising, and I was quite elated,” said Majorowski. “A lot of people supported me for the award, and it was tremendous.”

Majorowski, also known as “Major”, lived in Chicago until he moved to Texas in 1976. He is a former firefighter and attended Lubbock Christian University for his EMS training. Majorowski has been in the EMS field for 30 years and has been an instructor at SPC for four years. He has also worked for the Lubbock EMS. Most of the personnel at Lubbock EMS have received their basic training from Majorowski.

He attended the Awards Luncheon with his wife Carol of Lubbock, his daughter Maureen of San Angelo, three grandsons from San Angelo, and his two sisters from Chicago.

There were more than 15 other individuals nominated for the award. There were 25 letters of support from friends and co-workers in the industry, submitted describing Majorwski’s proud commitment to the EMS field.  He has volunteered his time to the Shattered Dreams anti-drunken-driving program and other educational efforts. Not only is he dedicated to promoting the EMS field, he works hard to make sure his students are well trained.

“Jim is an individual that has touched many lives in EMS throughout the state and nation,” said Christopher Metsgar, clinical coordinator for EMS programs at SPC. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to have him as a colleague here at South Plains College, and he is very deserving of this award.”
