Fire damages office in Technical Arts Building by Hilary McNamara, opinion editor
A candle warmer or lamp left plugged in could be to blame for
a recent fire that damaged one office and disrupted classes in
the Technical Arts Building on the first day of the spring
semester at South Plains College’s Levelland campus.

SPC's Keeling conducts community College All-Star Band by Laura Norris, news editor
Dr. Bruce Keeling is a professor of music and the SPC Jazz
Band Director. This is his 23rd year at South
Plains College. He also teaches at Eastern New Mexico
University as an adjunct trombone professor. He teaches a
variety of classes here at South Plains College such as jazz
band, brass choir, low brass ensembles, low brass lessons, and
music literature.
Former sergeant becomes new chief of police at SPC by Courtney Bullard, co-associate editor
A former sergeant from the Levelland police force has taken
over the position of chief of police at South Plains College.
Joe McDowell was a police officer for the
city of Levelland for 23 years until he retired Aug. 31,
2005. McDowell was born and raised in Levelland and feels
lucky to have done so. He attended South Plains College and
has 1,200 hours of law enforcement training.

Stracener nominated for Piper Professor award by Caroline Baslie, sports editor
Stracener, who is SPC's professor of welding technology,
joined the school in 1980 and was named program coordinator
the following year.
