Hello I am addicted to Guitar Hero Two
by Jon Seaborn, editor-in-chief
Welcome to my first opinion
of the first student newspaper for which I now serve as
editor-and-chief.
I know that I have some big
shoes to fill, coming in to lead after Ray Buffington, a great
editor. But I think the paper is going no where but up.
I look forward to working
with this semester’s staff as well. We have really great
editors right now, and some writers who put me to shame. So I
know that you are in for a treat this year.
I thought that I would start
off with something light, and not my usual "crazy liberal"
banter. I know that we have had opinions about being addicted
to WOW, or World of Warcraft, a video game where you’re
wizards or something. I am not really sure. But my video game
addiction is not a RPG, or role playing game, but Guitar Hero
Two.
I think that you should know
that I don’t consider myself to be a video game person at all.
I actually get sick while playing most games, mainly first
person shooter games. I guess it has something to do with the
way they move. But there is something about Guitar Hero that I
just can't stop playing.
The game is not a lot like
playing a real guitar, but it’s close. The game is set up kind
of like DDR, or Dance Dance Revolution. It shoots colored dots
at you that you have to hit on beat with the song that you are
playing.
For a while, I thought my
addiction was one of a kind. But I now know of large groups of
people who can't stop playing Guitar Hero. Even my best
friend’s mother plays, and she just turned 50.
My friend Mitch and I will
stay up all night playing the game. The longest we have played
is around six hours. The crazy thing is that we have beaten
the game, so we are just playing with no goal but to rock out
as hard as we can.
At first, I really didn't
want anyone to know I loved a video game. But I no longer
care. I love this game, and will be happily playing Guitar
Hero Two until the third installment comes out.
You see, I was not writing
that it’s sad that there is this addiction, or that video
games are bad, but that Guitar Hero rocks. And that, my
friends, is my opinion.
