John receives 'Spirit' award at MLK  vigil

In the hallway, echoes of the famous speech, “I Have a Dream”, could be heard, in honor of the candlelight service for the presentation of the Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. awards.

Progress, empowerment, and a need for involvement in community were the messages at the Candlelight Service hosted by the Black Student Organization and the diversity program at South Plains College, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King’s Legacy.

Early numbers show increase in enrollment

Preliminary indications are that spring enrollment has increased by 5 percent since last year, according to early comparisons presented by Vice President of Student Affairs David Jones during the January meeting of the South Plains College Board of Regents.

The report did not include open registration.  The number of students from within the Levelland tax district has increased from 4,856 to 5,142.

Ice skating classes set to begin in fall

Students at South Plains College will soon be more than just figuratively skating on thin ice with the addition of an ice skating class to the Physical Education Department curriculum. 

No other local college or university currently offers a similar course.  However, starting in the fall of 2008, SPC students will have this unique opportunity.  Curriculum will focus on teaching people how to ice skate, as well as on developing the skills of those who already know how. 

Blood drive set for Feb. 5

 The Student Nursing Organization at South Plains is sponsoring a blood drive on Feb. 5.

 

The drive is set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The donor bus will be located in the parking lot east of

the Technical Arts Building.

 

Dallas cheerleaders making appearance for 50th Homecoming

This year, South Plains College is hosting a number of events in the hopes of making the 50th Homecoming a memorable one.

The Student Government Association is putting on a date auction, along with a kissing booth. The students “sold” in the date auction will accompany their buyers to the Homecoming\Valentine’s dance, which is being put on by the Hispanic Student Organization. The dance will start after the Texans’ game.

Professors add iTunes U to aid students

One of the best ways to reach students is through the power of technology.

Several members of the South Plains College faculty are doing just that, creating a way to make their lectures available on iTunes. Leading this endeavor is the Biology Department. Jill Haukos, assistant professor of biology, and Leanna Smith, associate professor of biology, are the creators of this idea at SPC.

'Think Pink' night to raise breast cancer awareness

“Think Pink” night has been designated for Feb. 11.

SPC will team up with Covenant Hospital in Levelland, and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to raise awareness, and money, for Breast Cancer Research. The South Plains College men’s and women’s basketball teams will take on Clarendon College at the Texan Dome on this same night.

Thursday Night Live returns Feb. 7

South Plains College students turn the microphones back on and light up the stage for the first performance of the spring semester of “Thursday Night Live.”

The first show will be on Feb. 7 in the Tom T. Hall Recording and Production Studio in the Creative Arts Building. The performance starts promptly at 7:30 p.m., and doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is free, and anyone is welcome to attend. Seating is limited, so arriving early is recommended.
