Jazz Band sets March 7 concert

Tap your foot, get out of that seat, all you need is
this jazz beat.
The South Plains College’s jazz band will be performing
with Coronado High School jazz band on March 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the SPC
Theatre.
The SPC jazz band is under the directed of Dr. Bruce
Keeling, professor of music, and CHS jazz band is under directed Phil
Sutherland.
The jazz program is excited to have the Coronado jazz
band return to SPC’s stage. Sutherland directs Coronado’s jazz band, chairs
the region jazz tryouts and all-region jazz band, while also performing with
several groups in the South Plains region.
Coronado will be performing: “Gumbo Caliente,” by Doug
Beach, featuring soloist Kyle Spearman on trumpet, Cody Cross on baritone
saxophone and Ben Watson on trombone. Other selections include “I Didn’t
Know About You,” by Duke Ellington, featuring vocalist Kacee Lee, “New
Toys,” by Bill Liston, featuring Craig Payne on trombone and “Route 66,”
arranged by Peter Blair.
After the Coronado performance, the SPC’s jazz band
begin its performance with “ The Opener,” by Carl Strommen, a swing piece,
featuring soloist Daniel Colina from Littlefield on trumpet and Charles
Brown from White Deer on guitar.
Another selection is “Big Daddy’s Blues,” a sleazy
blues chart by Howard Rowe, featuring John Paul Landin from Frenship on
trombone, Colina on trumpet; Jason Norton from Lubbock Coronado on baritone
saxophone, Erica Weemes from Levelland on trombone; Ruth Cunningham from New
Deal on trombone and Brown on guitar.
They will also be performing, “ Jambalaya Jane,” by The
Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It features a solo, Dr. Jackie Wright, a professor
of anatomy and physiology at SPC, on accordion and Landin on trombone.
Another selection is “A Child is Born,” by Thad Jones, a ballad featuring Al
Gardner, professor of percussion at SPC, on piano and Greg John on Fluegal
horn. The last selection will be “Jammin’ At Rocco’s,” a medium shuffle by
Tome Davis, featuring Colina on trumpet and Brown on guitar.
There will be a reception following the performance in
the foyer of the Fine Arts Building.
Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the free night of
jazzy music.
