BSO Nabs Homecoming King, Queen Crowns

Homecoming has once again come and gone from South Plains College.  While one group of students was concentrating on winning the game, there was another group who looked forward to this day for other reasons.

Nine young couples presented themselves in stunning array in hopes of becoming this year’s Homecoming King and Queen.

Homecoming 2006 was on Feb. 16, with the coronation taking place at halftime of the men’s basketball game.

The 48th Homecoming King and Queen were Markus Johnson and Ashley Burgess, who represented the Black Student Organization.  Both agreed that winning this honor felt good, and sent a heartfelt thank you to everyone in the BSO and to all those who voted for them.

“I feel good being a college Homecoming King,” said Johnson.  “It’s very different from high school.”

“I feel nervous right now, but it’s exciting,” Burgess said.

Johnson, 21, is a sports management major from Bryan, Texas.  He is the son of Richard and Deven Maxey.  Johnson serves as the wing advisor for Stroud Hall.

Burgess, 18, is from Lubbock.  She is an early childhood education major, and is the daughter of Carolyn and Ocie Burgess.

This year’s plaques were presented by Cale Stevenson and Jaimie Diaz, who were last year’s Homecoming King and Queen.

Bucky Demel, 20, and Sarah Farr, 19, represented the SPC band organization.  Demel is an education major from Levelland, and Farr is a nursing major from Brownfield.  .

Nominees from the Campus Ambassadors were Ross Orman and Kristin Carrol.  Orman, 19, is a business major from Levelland, while Carrol, 20, is a psychology major from Meadow, Texas.

Fabian Sanchez and Tonya Espinosa represented the Hispanic Student Organization.  Sanchez, 22, of Littlefield, is an education major and Espinosa, 19, is an anthropology major from Idalou.

Representing the Law Enforcement Club were Casey Shumate, 21, from Roswell, NM, and Julia Berry, 35, from Lubbock.  Both are law enforcement majors.

Jacob Tucker, 19, and Erica Cayless, 19,  represented by Phi Theta Kappa.  Tucker is a Public Relations/Print Journalism major from Paducah, Texas, while Cayless, who is from Lamesa, is a paralegal major.

The Press Club candidates were Ray Buffington, 23, and Giovanni Rosendo, 19, who are both from Lubbock.  Buffington is a print journalism major, while Rosendo is a photojournalism major.

Representing the SPC Ski Club were Brent Warner, 24, and Kyra Christian, 19.  Warner, who is from Brownfield, is majoring in business administration while Christian is a psychology major from Farwell, Texas

The STAR Center candidates were Dawson Munoz, 21,  a business major from   Brownfield, and Brandie Vasek, 19,  a psychology major from Wilson, Texas.

The Student Government Association was represented by Leo Sanchez, 20, and Ashley Martinez, 21.  Martinez is a nursing major from Littlefield, and Sanchez, is and engineering major from Denver City, Texas.
