Lady Texan always 'Seals' deal

by Cody Barron, staff writer

History has been made. The Lady Texans made history on February 12. The Lady Texan set the school record for most consecutive wins in a season.

The 61-40 win over Western Texas College was the 26th in a row for the Lady Texans, who are a perfect 26-0 overall and 10-0 in conference play this season.

Ashlee Roberson led the Lady Texans with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Brittany Blackmon added 10 points.

At home, the Lady Texans are only allowing opponents to score an average of 52.2 points a game. Even more impressive, SPC opponents are only shooting an average of 33.3 percent from the field. Only 25 opponents have shot better than 40 percent against the Lady Texans.

The Lady Texans are a perfect 13-0 in games played at the Texan Dome this season. SPC has a record of 36-3 at home during the past three seasons.

The Lady Texans continued their march toward a perfect season after knocking off Midland College, Frank Phillips, New Mexico Junior College, and Howard College.

Coach Michelle Wyatt says it is all about the consistency.

“I have been really proud of the way our kids have competed on a consistent basis,” Wyatt said. “ They work hard in practice and play well as a team. We still have several things as a team that we need to work on and hope to continue to get better.”

The Lady Texans are at the top of the polls in the NJCAA. Wyatt says the success has come from just taking it one game at a time.

“The kids have done a great job concentrating on our next opponent and not looking ahead,” Wyatt said.

The Lady Texans defeated Howard College, 50-46, on Feb. 1. Mariame Djouara and Blackmon led the Lady Texans with 12 points each. Alana Rumph and Dominic Seals scored 9 each in the winning effort.

The Lady Texans also knocked off New Mexico Junior College, 92-62. Blackmon led the Lady Texans with 22 points, while Roberson and Djoura each added 16. The Lady Texans shot 52 percent from the field in that game.

On Feb.8, the Lady Texans defeated Frank Phillips College, 100-63. Seals led all scorers with 17 points.

The Lady Texans beat Midland College, 83-58, on Feb 10. The win tied the school record for consecutive wins in a season set by the 2001-2002 Lady Texan team.

The Lady Texans will be on the road this coming week, playing at Clarendon College on Feb. 16 and at Odessa, on Feb. 19.
