Scholarship deadline fast approaching

by Laura Cain, co-entertainment editor

The deadline for current and incoming students to submit their applications for scholarships is fast approaching.

South Plains College offers college-wide, program-specific and nontraditional scholarships to students who have performed well academically. The deadline to apply is March 1.

The application requires one to three letters of recommendation and a written essay. Students who have applied in the past or have received scholarships before need to reapply. The bottom of the application has the option for students to fill out information involving the student’s financial situation. All applications are kept confidential.

The college-wide scholarships are exclusively for SPC students. The program scholarships are awarded by advisors. Departmental scholarships are also available. Students must contact the individual department they are interested in for the application process and deadline. Stephen John, vice president of institutional advancement, recommends that everyone apply.

“If you have worked hard and have good grades, this is a reward for your work,” John said.

There are more than 100 scholarships to give away, ranging in value from $150 to $500. The selection process is executed by nine faculty members who review the applications and use a point system to determine how much a student will receive.

“Many of the students receive scholarships if they just apply,” says John.

Students may receive one college-wide scholarship and/or a program scholarship. There are other forms of financial aid available at SPC as well. There are Pell Grants and unsubsidized grants and loans.

“Donors provide scholarships because they want students to attend SPC,” John says.

To apply for the scholarships, go to www.southplainscollege.edu, and click on the application link on the main page. Completed applications must be returned to the SPC Scholarship Office located in the Administration Building on the Levelland Campus. Applications can also be hand delivered to Scholarship Office, or can be mailed to SPC Scholarship Office, 1401 S. College, Box 148, Levelland, Texas, 79336. All mailed applications must be postmarked before March 1.

All students interested are encouraged to apply as early as possible, and then call and verify the receipt of their application. The Scholarship Office can be reached by email at scholarships@southplainscollege.edu, or by phone at (806)-894-9611, ext. 2219.

“SPC is working to make it financially easier for current students,” says John.
