by Brant Thurmond, sports editor

The South Plains College women’s basketball team recently bounced back from their first loss in Western Junior College Athletic conference play with two consecutive victories.

On Feb. 11, the Lady Texans bounced back with a 63-48 victory against Clarendon College at the Texan Dome.

The Lady Texans started out shooting poorly from the field in the first half, making just 12 of their 32 shots. Even though the Lady Texans never ran away from the Lady Bulldogs in the second half, they managed to stretch the lead to the final margin of 15 points.

Blackmon led the Lady Texans with 16 points, while Chasity Workman and Mariame Djouara each tossed in 14. Rachel Gray had eight points and 11 rebounds, while Krystal Davis scored four and Haruka Nagado chipped in three. Ashley Frazier and,  McKinsie East both added two points in the winning effort.

On Feb. 7, the Lady Texans got back to their winning ways by beating Western Texas College, 68-51. The Lady Texans trailed only once, and that was 2-0. They then opened up a double-digit lead by halftime at 33-23, and outscored the Lady Westerners 35-28 in the second half. The Lady Texans shot 52 percent from the field for the game.

Djourara led the Lady Texans with 22 points, while Frazier chipped in 13, and Blackmon had 12. Workman had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Gray tossed in four points, East tossed in three and Davis had two points.

The 17-game winning streak for the Lady Texans came to an end on Feb. 4.

The sixth-ranked Lady Texans fell to No. 10 Midland College 70-52 in Midland. It was the first loss for SPC since Nov. 9.

The Lady Texans’ inability to connect from behind the 3-point line and Midland’s hot shooting led to their first conference loss in WJCAC play. Midland hit nine shots from long range, while the Lady Texans were 0-12 from long range.

The lead changed hands several times early on, before Midland took the lead and was up 42-31 at halftime.

Blackmon led the Lady Texans with 21 points. Workman had 12, while Djouara had six, Gray scored five, and Frazier and Davis pitched in four.

On Jan. 31, the Lady Texans rolled past the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen, 67-54.

Blackmon again led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Texans.

The Lady Texans used a 33-23 halftime lead and great defense to hold the Lady Plainsmen to just one field goal in the final 3:25 to pull out the 13-point victory.

Frazier had 17 points for the Lady Texans. Djouara scored 17, with Workman adding seven points and 15 rebounds, Gray tossing in six points and East contributing one point.

The Lady Texans played Odessa College on Feb. 14. The results were unavailable at press time.
