by Cody Barron, staff writer
The Western Junior College
Athletic Conference race is coming down to the wire. The
South Plains College men’s basketball team needs a strong
showing in the second-half of the conference season if they
want to hold on to a Region V Tournament birth. The Texans
got back to their winning ways on Feb. 11 when they hosted
Clarendon College after dropping two consecutive games.
The
Texans held the Bulldogs to just five field goals in the
first half, which helped SPC take a 35-12 halftime lead.
Knight in, Knight out
by Brant Thurmond, sports
editor In case you haven’t
heard from numerous interviews on ESPN and other local
media, Bob Knight, Texas Tech University’s head men’s
basketball coach, has resigned.
The announcement came on Feb. 4, and it
was a shocker to the sports nation. Knight said that his
resignation comes in the middle of the season because he has
been really tired throughout the season and thought that it
was time to step down.
Shaq trade could make suns hot
by John Stewart, editorial
assistant
The trade that sent Phoenix Suns’ forward Shawn Marion, a
crucial player to the team’s past success, and guard Marcus
Banks to the Miami Heat for aging center Shaquille O'Neal
has raised many questions.
Is this a
steal and the move that will lead the Suns past all the
recent playoff failures? Can Shaq still produce efficiently
and be effective when Tim Duncan comes around in the
playoffs?

End of NFL season causes void in sports life
by Nathan Wall, staff writer
With the NFL season at an end, and the beginning of the MLB
season still a couple of months away, a void in my life
opens up.
I become a lost individual who finds no
reason to watch ESPN. The talk of spring training, free
agency and the NFL draft are a poor consolation prize for my
heavy heart.
It’s truly days like this that I am
glad never repeat themselves. Only Bill Murray in “Groundhog
Day” had to go through that hell.
Samoei breaks mile record at Tech meet
by Nathan Wall, staff writer
The South Plains College men’s and women’s track teams
finished the indoor track season recently in record-breaking
fashion.
When the final gun sounded at the Texas
Tech Invitational in Lubbock on Feb. 9, six school records
that stood for more than 20 years fell. The highlight
performance of the meet came from freshman Fred Samoei, who
ran a mile in 3:58.84, becoming the first SPC athlete to run
a sub-four minute mile and breaking the school record that
stood for 22 years.
Spagnuola's future with Giants no longer in doubt
by Cody Barron, staff writer
Giants fans can rest assured that the defensive unit that
stymied the record-breaking New England Patriots offense in
the Super Bowl will still have their leader.
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo signed a three-year
contract extension that will pay him more than $2 million
per season to stay with the Giants, making him the NFL’s
highest paid defensive coordinator.

College’s Nick Okorie, a dream to play for a very
prestigious university will come true.
Okorie, a sophomore guard for the men’s
basketball team, has verbally committed to play basketball
at Texas Tech University, starting with the 2008-2009

“Texas Tech has always been my top
choice,” Okorie said. “It is sad that I am not going to get
to play for Coach Bob Knight, but it doesn’t take away from
my wanting to go to Tech and play in the Big 12
