Food, fellowship highlight spiritual

REZ Week Plans

Food, fun and fellowship are just a few things that students can experience during REZ Week.

REZ Week is March 20-24, a week full of fellowship and good food for all.  This week is sponsored by Baptist Student Ministries, the Wesley Foundation and Chi Alpha to help students become closer to Christ, according to Arlano Funderburk, BSM director.

“Education is wonderful and important to life, but one needs Christ in order to have a full and complete life,” said Funderburk.

Amy Hicks, director of the Wesley Foundation, said the whole purpose of the week is to show students that Christ is a resource that will help in life, much like the classes students take.  The organizations teamed up to stress to all students that Christ is “not just any old resource.”  He is the ultimate resource in life, according to Funderburk.

“Students grow intellectually while they are at college,” says Funderburk.  “But with our help, they also can grow spiritually.”

REZ Week started about three years ago when a young BSM assistant, Ashley Roberts, suggested that the organizations get together to do something to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, but not for a day.  She thought they could have a week of food, fun and fellowship.  Similar ideas were attempted in the past, but none the same scale.

REZ Week was born, and since then the week has begun to gain more and more support, Hicks said.

“Last year we had about 300 people at each lunch, and we are expecting about 400 or more,” Hicks said.

Hicks added that normally when students see this kind of effort go out for a “church” event, they turn tail and run.  Many think that the people sponsoring the event will try to preach to them and shove their beliefs down their throats whether you like it or not.  This is not the case for REZ Week, according to Funderburk.

“There are no tricks and no strings attached,” Funderburk.  “We are just trying to talk to people about God.”

The week will begin with a service at the BSM at 8:30 p.m. on March 20.  On March 21, students will travel from dorm to dorm visiting with students and handing out Easter eggs filled with candy and a schedule of the week’s events.  On March 22, there will be a block party, beginning at 7 p.m.  The event will feature be hot dogs, music and games to entertain all who come.  On March 23, there will be a devotional/testimonial time in the Baker Center lobby at 8 p.m. Students are also invited to eat lunch, for free, everyday at the BSM, which is located on the north side of the campus, during the week.

There will also be live music and speakers during the lunches.  The two keynote speakers are Jose Munoz and Dave Jobe.  Both are great speakers and will deliver great messages that should impact student’s lives, according to Hicks.

“These speakers will share applicable stories, and give the students a chance to re-connect with God during Easter,” said Hicks.

The music will be provided through the South Plains College commercial music program.  There will be two praise and worship bands, a contemporary Christian group, and another special group from a Levelland church.  Each will perform daily while everyone eats.

Funderburk said the event will be led primarily by students.  Almost all of the activities held during the week will be publicized by students.  Flyers and Easter eggs will be handed out and posted throughout the South Plains campus.

“During the week you, will receive good food for the body and for the soul,” said Hicks.

T-shirts will also be sold, but a price has not been set.  For information about REZ Week, you can stop by the Wesley Foundation or the BSM.
