Burning Bigotry, not Books -

Taking Classics off the Shelves not the Answer

by Ray Buffington editor-in-chief

Public schools and colleges, alike, are institutions that were created to educate people, giving them knowledge they lacked before, therefore making them more intelligent individuals and less naïve about what is out there in the world. This ultimately adds to our society a nice piece of non-idiotism.

A nifty contraption, right? I like to think so. I am, after all, paying an arm and a leg to attend college and attain a higher level of non-ignorance.

Smurfette Sets Stage for Symbolism

by Giovanni Rosendo, associate editor

It seems that women have always been interpreted as being one of two extremes, either highly sensitive or offensive.

With the return of classic cartoons on DVD, I began thinking about how the female characters have been portrayed.  One in particular was Smurfette.

One Man's Art Explosion - Just Another Man's Trash

by Christopher Byram, opinion writer

Things have been difficult for everyone since age 2, for the most part. Pain exists in the world. That is an undeniable absolute. The fact that teenagers and young adults are more emotionally unbalanced (or emotionally inexperienced) is also a given. We’re all a little screwy, even if it’s just chemistry that’s screwing with our heads. The painful chemistry of puberty, post puberty, and often the introduction of a chemical combination of drugs and/or alcohol paired with the body’s own hormonal wreck are enough to create a whole new brand of pain and anguish.

As children grow into adolescents, that pain and anguish begin to form a voice. For many people, that suffering becomes expressed through the arts, music, poetry, creative writing, and of course, paints and oils.

Rise Above, don't Settle for Less than You Deserve

by Christopher Byram, opinion writer

In life, there are two options: settle or rise above.

The road of life is an arduous trial with no promises, and few happy endings. Problems that are set on a person act as a fork in the proverbial road of life, and a person can choose to rise above misfortune, or settle with it.

Don't Forget to Pack Your Morals

by Jessica Safavimehr, staff writer

As we embark on those trips to Cancun and other party hot spots, college students need to keep in mind the morning after. That crazy, wild night maybe be fun for a few hours, but then you have to live with showing up half naked on a “Girls Gone Wild” DVD. Everyone knows exactly what I am talking about. Taking five shots of tequila and drinking nickel can beer who could go wrong with that?

Surviving Spring Break

by Omar, Ojeda, staff writer

Spring Break is the one week during the spring semester that almost every student looks forward to, probably because it’s right in the center of the semester and provides time to work and catch up on upcoming papers and projects they have been procrastinating on right? Wrong!

Downloading Music Should Not Be Wrong

by Vanessa Garcia, staff writer

Thousands of songs are being downloaded everyday, which is hurting record sales for artists.  But if it weren’t for us the artists wouldn’t be where they are.  Sure they might have their own clothing line, and restaurants but it all started with selling records.  In order to spend money you have to make money, and because of us, they make money.

Think Before You Blow that Tax Refund

by Amelia Gonzales, staff writer

The deadline for filing your income tax return is a little more than a month away.

For many, it is a dreary time. But for those Americans who get to see that much desired, much anticipated, income tax check, it is a time of celebration and shopping sprees.

'American Idol' A Guilty Pleasure

by Amelia Gonzales, staff writer

Well it’s that time again. Another season of  “American Idol” has begun.

If any of you want to bash it and call it trash, then go ahead. But I bet that you are the first who are glued to your television every Tuesday and Wednesday to watch this television crack.

Bitter About Bush

by Vanessa Garcia, staff writer

As you may have noticed in our last issue, the Man-on-the Street question asked if we have lost faith in out president.

For me, it was long ago. What I think is that our president shouldn’t be president. President George W. Bush really shouldn’t have been re-elected.  He really hasn’t done much for our country. No matter who follows as the next president, no one will be able to clean up the mess President Bush has made.

Truck Size Doesn't Make You Manly

by Cody Flores, staff writer

It's just an attempt to hide the fact that you’re gay. I don’t care what size engine you have, or how fast “she” goes from zero to 60. You’re 25, and it’s sitting in your parents’ driveway. And what’s the big hurry? I can’t think of any reason why somebody would need to be going that fast in that short amount of time anyway, unless of course they were racing other guys with equally small genitalia.

Learning to be Liberal in Lubbock

by Jennifer Conlee, co-news editor

Until then, I was happy living in my oblivious state of not caring.  Then, I turned 18.  Suddenly, the presidential elections came along, and I was persuaded to vote.  This was when I had to start deciding where my loyalties lie.

Adolf Hitler: A Complete Genius
