Surviving Spring Break

 Omar Ojeda, staff writer

Spring Break. These two words define a week-long party of binge drinking and letting loose for most college students.

Spring Break is the one week during the spring semester that almost every student looks forward to, probably because it’s right in the center of the semester and provides time to work and catch up on upcoming papers and projects they have been procrastinating on right? Wrong!

It’s the one week during the semester when you can do whatever you want all week long. It’s incredible. It’s the one week you can do whatever you have planned on doing. Most students usually go on a vacation, possibly hitting the hot spots such as the beach. But no matter what your plans are for spring break, don’t be careless and make stupid decisions. Whether you plan on binge drinking, working, or just relaxing, make the right decision and don’t become a statistic for the teen deaths that occur during spring break. I know that you can have more fun than you expect and still be safe about it.

My personal experience is when I went to South Padre Island last spring break. It was unbelievable, but I still came home alive and uninjured. Of course, my friends and I did everything that you would expect us to do, but we knew our limits and everything was fine and great.

Other than all the drunks who were staggering around and kegs getting drained by an axe pick by the police, I did see a few people get taken away by the ambulance. I saw that some had consumed so much it poisoned their bodies, and someone broke a leg after misjudging distance because he had too much to drink. I think the biggest factor involved with all the accidents that occur during spring break is peer pressure. Peer pressure can be good and bad. It works both ways.

So even if something looks cool to do, eat, or drink and you know it’s not a good idea, be a friend and help out. If you can’t depend on friends, who can you depend on? I mean, what are friends for? So I advise everyone to just keep that in mind this Spring Break as you’re out there getting trashed and naked. Take the advice; it might be a lifesaver.
