 Jared Owens, staff writer

The South Plains College men’s basketball team can breathe a sigh of relief after guaranteeing themselves a spot in the NJCAA Region V Tournament with recent victories against Frank Phillips College and Clarendon College.

The Texans will play in the NJCAA Region V Tournament, which will be held March 9-12 at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University.

The top four teams in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and the top four teams in the Northern Junior College Athletic Conference will compete in the event.

The Texans took another step toward securing a spot in post-season play on Feb. 16 in Levelland by downing Frank Phillips 79-62 and picking up their 20th victory of the season.

The Texans trailed the Plainsmen early in the game, but propelled by 50-percent shooting from the field, SPC was able to take a 39-27 lead into halftime. The Texans never relinquished the lead in the second half. Steve Harley and Jermaine Bolden led the way for SPC with 17 points apiece.

SPC Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Green picked up career victory No. 299 as his Texans went on the road and defeated Clarendon College 90-78 on Feb. 20. Two SPC players did reach career highs in points Monday. Kendall Clark played arguably his best game ever as a Texan, scoring 25 points and snatching 15 rebounds. Dwight Collins also had a career night in points, tossing in 21.

The Texans took advantage of a 15-point halftime lead to coast in the second half.

The Texans hosted No. 1 Howard College on Feb. 23 at the Texan Dome before the largest crowd of the season, as the fans came out with hopes of seeing SPC pull off an upset.

The first half looked promising, as the grabbed a 40-35 at intermission. But in the second half, Howard owned up to its top ranking, beginning the half with a 22-2 run and rallying to post an 80-57 victory.

The Hawks outscored the Texans 45-17 in the second half.  Clark led the Texans with 15 points.

SPC Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Green picked up career win No. 300 as his Texans defeated the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds 83-55 on Feb. 27 in Hobbs.

SPC was plagued with turnovers throughout the first half, but 18 first half points for Clark helped give the Texans a 34-30 halftime lead. In the second half, Harley picked up with the hot hand, pouring in 20 points as the Texans went on a 49-25 run to secure the victory.

The victory over New Mexico Junior College secured third place in the WJCAC play for the Texans.

The Texans were to play their regular season finale against Midland College on March 2 at Texan Dome. Results were not available at present time.
