SPC Roper to Compete at Houston Rodeo

 Lacye Vines, staff writer

A member of the South Plains College rode team has been selected to compete in RodeoHouston Collegiate Championship at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Kelsey Garrison, a sophomore from Channing N.M, will compete in tie-down calf roping. He is currently ranked no. 2 in the southwest region.  Garrison was named the champion calf roper at both Sul Ross and Vernon College rodeos during the fall.  The only person ranked higher is a former SPC student Adam Gray, who is currently competing with Texas Tech University.

The top four collegiate performers in each event are chosen from around the nation to participate in this special showcase.  The Rodeo will not have any effect on the SPC Rodeo Team’s regional standings, but it gives the competitors the chance to compete at Reliant Stadium in front of 20,000 to 30,000 fans and brings publicity for the college rodeo.

“Kelsey is one of our best athletes in that event this year, and one of the best I have seen in a long time,” SPC Rodeo Coach Josh Crow said. “It is a great chance for young athletes to get exposure.”

The showcase will be held during the Houston Livestock and Rodeo March 19.
