Season success helps Lady Texans earn share of WJCAC title

The South Plains College Lady Texans have clinched at least a share of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship.

The Lady Texans downed the Howard College Lady Hawks on Feb. 25 by a 58-40 margin.

The game was tied at 18 with 9:49 left in the first half, but the Lady Texans held Howard scoreless for more than six minutes. The Lady Hawks managed only one free throw in the final 9:49, as the Lady Texans held a 31-19 lead at halftime.

Chasity Workman scored a season-high 17 points and came down with 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Texans. Brittany Blackmon added 16 points for the Lady Texans.

Ashley Frazier had nine points, while Mariame Djouara added six and Rachel Gray scored five. Haruka Nagado chipped in three points, and McKinsie East added two points

On Feb.14, the Lady Texans knocked off the Odessa College Lady Wranglers 75-49.The Lady Texans trailed by four points early before going on a 12-0 run to lead 35-21 at halftime. The Lady Texans then extended their lead to 20 early in the second half when Nagado scored six consecutive points. The Lady Texans led by as many as 33 points in the second half.For the Lady Texans, Nagado came off the bench to score 21 points. Nagado hit four of her six shots from three-point territory and was perfect from the free throw line, sinking all three of her free-throw attempts.

Djouara scored 16 points, while Blackmon had 10 and Workman tossed in eight. Gray and Frazier both had six, while East and Krystal Davis chipped in four in the winning effort.

The Lady Texans can win the WJCAC title with a win against New Mexico Junior College on Feb. 28. The Lady Texans had a one-game lead over Midland College going into the game on Feb. 28. Results were not available at press time.
