GOVERNMENT 2302
READINGS THREE AND FOUR
Instructions
1. Read the definition of classical liberalism
2. Read the requirements for each article
3. Print and read the scoring rubrics to both articles
4. Go to the links and read the articles
5. Write
1. Read the definition below - it will help you
understand the main idea of Morone's article.
Classical Liberalism asserts the dignity of the individual and their rational ability to think and control their own destinies. It derives from such Enlightenment thinkers as Locke, Rousseau and Adam Smith; each of these authors wrote that individuals are better able to control their lives than the government, and, if left alone, would produce a prosperous, stable, and just society. NOTE: Classical liberalism is NOT the same as today's modern liberalism. Try these links for explanations of political liberals and political conservatives.
2. Requirements
Both of these articles deal with how the United States has historically
dealt with influences from other cultures.
Morone Article - The Struggle For American Culture
The first reading, by James Morone, seeks to explain how America's classical liberalism (and be sure you understand what this term means) has been in a constant state of change since the very first European settlers arrived in the New World. Since that time, America has experienced waves of immigrants, cultural shifts in American society, politics, and economy, and a constant expansion and contraction of liberal ideas.
The first part of this assignment is to summarize Morone's basic ideas - this should be about one page. Do not quote from the article, do not simply paraphrase his article; instead, take his main arguments and ideas and explain what he is writing and attempting to communicate. Instead, identify and summarize the three or four (or more, if so inclined) main points you think Morone is attempting to communicate and explain them in your own words.
The second part of this assignment is to evaluate the arguments you identified in your first section and should be about one page. Examine the article’s logic and explain if you think Morone makes a solid case. Is his article logical and easy to understand? Do you think his explanations support his main ideas? Can you identify arguments or conclusions you think are right? Wrong?
Montaner Article - Crossbreeding
Makes America Great
The second article is by Carlos Alberto Montaner and explains that citizens of the United States have never been afraid to absorb political or cultural influences from other countries. According to Montaner this has produced one of the most truly unique political culture in the world. After attempting the Morone article, this should be much easier.
The first part of this assignment is to offer a brief (one or two paragraph) summary of Montaner’s article.
The second part of this assignment is to evaluate his article. This section should be about one page and evaluate his claim that the United States is unique in the we not only allow other cultures in America, but that we actually eagerly embrace new political, economic, and cultural influences. Evaluate his argument that societies that seek to define the "model" citizen end up creating sharp, and usually fatal divisions in that society. Is this a valid claim; do we do it here in the United States? Can you think of any other examples where the United States has adopted political or economic elements from other cultures?
The third part of this assignment is to compare and contrast Morone's article with Montaner’s, especially Morone's argument that American history is full of one group (racial, ethnic, gender) seeking to gain access to America’s power and opportunity as opposed to Montaner’s argument that most Americans really don’t even think about societal conflict, but simply go through life accepting the constant evolution of American culture.
3. Rubrics
Print these pages out and attach them to the front of your two articles.
Read them closely, for these are the standard by which I will grade your
responses.
