SPC to honor 2013 Pacesetters at Scholarship Gala on Feb. 23

LEVELLAND – South Plains College Foundation will honor three benefactors who have provided exemplary philanthropic support by naming them Pacesetters for 2013 during SPC’s 15th Annual Scholarship Gala on Feb. 23.

South Plains College will recognize Pat and Annette Sykora, the Paul and Verna Musslewhite family along with the Spencer and Irene Ellis family, and United Supermarkets. Doors open at 6 p.m. and Gala events are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on the Levelland campus.

“This is a special opportunity to recognize and honor a distinguished group of benefactors who have provided exemplary support and leadership for South Plains College and the Foundation,” said Dr. Kelvin Sharp, president of South Plains College.

“These individuals and organization, through their philanthropy, have set the pace in supporting scholarship programs for SPC students,” he said. “We are so grateful for the support the foundation continues to receive from many donors.”

This is the 11th year the SPC Foundation has singled out benefactors to receive the Pacesetter Award. The award is granted by the Board of Directors of the SPC Foundation.

Pat and Annette Sykora are being recognized for their support in ways such as contributions to the college’s initiative to raise impact scholarships and gala participation. The Sykoras operate Smith South Plains, a family owned dealership that has served the people of West Texas for more than 60 years. Each year, they honor their Employee of the Year by making a donation in the name of the employee to the impact scholarship program. While serving on the board of directors for the National Automobile Dealers Association, Annette was instrumental in getting Ford Motors to donate hybrid vehicles to the SPC Automotive Technology Program

The Paul and Verna Musslewhite family along with the Spencer and Irene Ellis family are being honored for establishing the Paul and Verna Musslewhite American Petroleum Institute Scholarship, the Neal and Carolyn Ellis Scholarship for students majoring in pre-pharmacy and the Spencer and Irene Ellis Scholarship in Business Administration.

The Paul and Verna Musslewhite API Scholarship was established to assist students majoring in engineering. Paul owned and operated the Musslewhite Trucking.

Neal Ellis owned and operated Neal Ellis Pharmacy, continuing his father’s legacy of what was originally Ellis Pharmacy. The businesses collectively serviced Levelland for more than 50 years. Richard Ellis is being recognized for establishing the Spencer and Irene Ellis Memorial Scholarship for students majoring in Business Administration. The scholarship honors his grandparents.

United Supermarkets is being recognized for its continued support of academic scholarships and other educational initiatives. Most recently, the company supported the new South Plains College Center for Nursing and Allied Health Education with a $150,000 contribution.

“The partnerships we have with these benefactors, and their generosity make a difference in the lives of South Plains College students,” said Dr. Sharp. “It will be a great honor to spotlight these good friends of the college for their support and the vision they have to improve the lives of others.”
