SPC announces Distinguished Alumni for 2013

LEVELLAND – South Plains College has selected four former students to receive its highest alumni award for 2013.

The four former students will be named Distinguished Alumni at a special awards program planned in conjunction with the college’s annual Employee Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. on May 9 in the Physical Education Complex.

Selected for the honor are Brian T. Butcher, Deputy Software Lead, for the Morpheus Project at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston; Jamie K. Roney, R.N., Nurse Specialist, Sepsis Coordinator at Covenant Health System in Lubbock; Robin Satterwhite, Ed.D., Academic Dean for the School of Allied Health at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock; and Posthumous Award to Dennis Patton, former SPC Men’s Basketball Coach, co-owner of Chem-Tech Services in Levelland and former South Plains College Regent.

“It is an honor to salute these former students as distinguished alumni of South Plains College,” said Dr. Kelvin Sharp, president. “Each recipient has been recognized for outstanding career accomplishments and service in their respective professions. They represent the thousands of successful SPC graduates who are contributing to their professions and to society in a variety of ways.”

The 2013 Distinguished Alumni will be recognized during the 55th Annual Commencement set for 10 a.m. on May 10 in the Texan Dome.

Butcher studied computer science at South Plains College and has earned an Associate of Science degree. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Texas Tech.

Butcher is a software engineer for NASA in the ER6 Spacecraft Software Engineering Branch. Since May 2008, he has helped develop, integrate and test flight software for the Morpheus Lunar Lander prototype vehicle, the Advanced Extravehicular Mobility Unit Portable Life Support System and the International Low Impact Docking System.

Roney received an Associate of Applied Science in Associate Degree Nursing in May 1994 and Certificate of Proficiency in Vocational Nursing in 1991 from South Plains College. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management in December 2001 from Clayton University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in December 2011 from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She also received a Master of Science in Leadership in Nursing Education in January 2012 from TTUHSC.

Roney served the United States as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1987 through 2010 including activation and deployment in support of Operation Desert Storm, Joint Forge and Joint Endeavor.

Satterwhite received an Associate of Science in Business in May 1990 from South Plains College. He received a BBA in Management Information Systems in August 1992, MBA in Management in May 1997 and Doctorate in Education in Higher Education Administration in August 2004, all from Texas Tech.

Since July 2012, Satterwhite has served as the Dean and Professor in the School of Allied Health at TTUHSC. He is responsible for all academic and administrative operations within the school. As the Dean, he is responsible for the management of all resources necessary for the successful operations of 18 different academic programs within the school as well as more than 1,300 students enrolled in a variety of undergraduate, masters and doctoral-level programs.

Patton received an Associate of Science in Business from South Plains College before he transferred to Texas Tech. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees at Texas Tech.

Patton, a native of Hobbs, N.M., competed on the SPC Texan basketball team for two years. In1966, he was co-captain of the first SPC Conference Championship team and was selected to the All-Region Basketball Team.

In 1972, Patton joined the SPC faculty as director of the Natatorium and served as assistant coach of the basketball team before becoming head coach in 1974. After six seasons guiding the Texans, Patton entered private business and would go on to be elected into the Texan Club Hall of Fame in 1993 and then to the SPC Board of Regents in 1994, a position he held until his death in July 2007.

The award recipients join 25 other former SPC students who have been named Distinguished Alumni since the program was initiated in 1987.

The winners of the award were selected from nominations received by the Distinguished Alumni Awards Selection Committee comprised of SPC faculty members Billy Alonzo, Cary Banks, Rob Blair, Dane Dewbre, David Etheredge, Julie Gerstenberger, Beth Glass, Ann Gregory, Jim Jenkins, Sue Ann Lopez, Mollie Melton, Peggy Skinner, Pete Stracener, Joe Tubb and Charlotte Young. The nominees were confirmed in the Board of Regent meeting held April 11.
