Former SPC Commercial Music student from Australia comes back to Texas

LEVELLAND – For years, South Plains College’s Commercial Music Department has attracted students from around the world. And, as for the students who attend SPC, they often return home and share their success stories with their fellow countrymen.

Because of the good reputation and solid training these musicians received at the college, Megan Laurie of Mildura, Australia ventured to SPC to hone her vocal and guitar playing skills.

Laurie arrived on campus in 2004. Her stay coincided with the enrollment of Craig Smith of Scotland and fellow Aussie Rachel McGlashan. The trio, known affectionately across campus as the “International Connection,” spent the next two years making their mark in the music community.

“We played in everything – TNL, Country Jukebox and Pickin’ on the Plains,” Laurie said. “This was the best place to learn and play music. We used to write and play music like crazy. It was a great experience.”

Laurie said currently Smith is still singing and playing the guitar with Jim Lauderdale, a country and bluegrass singer/songwriter. McGlashan left music behind to pursue a career as a chef.

Laurie is back in Texas to perform the old stuff at local spots including Triple Js, Cactus Theatre and Mean Woman Grill. She will finish her Texas shows with a performance Saturday (July 26) at Ransom Canyon and Tuesday (July 29) at the Mean Woman Grill.

Laurie said she paid her dues by performing at lunch and dinner every Friday at Larry’s Smokehouse. With the help of Cary Banks, assistant professor of Commercial Music, and Scott Farris, former instructor at SPC, Laurie co-produced a self-title album which featured a couple of hit songs. The songs, “Kissin the Wind” and “Light At The End Of The Bottle” are still available on YouTube.

Laurie left South Plains College to pursue her own musical dreams. She traveled and played in North Carolina, Delaware, Chicago, Nashville, Kentucky and Indianapolis. After a few years in the United States, Laurie returned to Australia. In 2009, she married Brad Shaw who accompanied her on her visit to Texas. Professionally, Laurie Shaw works as a bank manager for the Commonwealth Bank in Mildura during the day and continues to play music in local spots. She also gives vocal lessons.

“I grew up on country music listening to artists George Jones and Tammy Wynette,” she said. “I like that style of music, and that’s what I enjoy singing.

“Ideally, I’d love to move back here, and maybe finish my degree or teach,” Laurie Shaw said. “SPC is a fantastic institution for people who want to be here, and the instructors are passionate about what they’re teaching.”
