High school team captures SPC robotics competition
REESE CENTER – For the second time since the conception of the Tin Man Competition, a high school team has walked away with the coveted trophy. The team, Boss Hog, from Brownfield High School was crowned champions in the Tin Man IX South Plains College Robotics Class Robot Battle. The event was held Friday (Dec. 7) in Building Six on the Reese campus.
The contest featured 13 teams representing students in the electronics technology program from the SPC main campus in Levelland, SPC Reese Center and SPC Plainview Center as well as teams from Plainview High School and Brownfield High School. The contest marked the first time Brownfield High has participated in the event.
The Orange Teams represented the Reese campus, the Blue Teams represented the Levelland campus and the Red Teams represent Plainview.
A panel of three judges was comprised of Andrew Ruiz, registrar at SPC; Michael St. Clair, instructor in Industrial Manufacturing/Emerging Technologies, and Manuel Prieto, maintenance supervisor at SPC Plainview Center.
The winning Boss Hog team was comprised of Colton Drake, Garrett Besler, Reese Rowdon, Jonathan Williamson, Rocky Rey and Rodney Warren. According to Eddie Nicholson, Industrial Technology teacher at Brownfield, “we had 10 highly motivated guys who were pretty new in the beginning and they finished better than we could have anticipated.”
The Electronic and Manufacturing Technologies Program includes the Robotics course as part of the electronics curriculum. Among the concepts introduced range from what is a robot through the construction of a home-made Computer Numerical Control machine. A CNC Machine is a machine that uses a computer to control its motions and associated with milling and cutting machines. Industrial robotics is emphasized throughout the curriculum.
