Plainview High School team captures SPC robotics competition

REESE CENTER – For the third time since the conception of the Tin Man Competition, a high school team has walked away with the coveted trophy. The Jaws team from Plainview High School was crowned champions in the Tin Man X South Plains College Robotics Class Robot Battle. The event was held Friday (April 26) in Building Six on the Reese campus.

The contest featured 10 teams representing students in the electronics technology program from the SPC main campus in Levelland, SPC Reese Center as well as teams from Plainview High School and Brownfield High School. All three teams from Plainview High swept the preliminary rounds.

The Orange Teams represented the SPC Reese Center campus, the Blue Teams represented the Levelland campus and the Red Teams represented both Plainview High and Brownfield High.

SPC Reese participants were James Brown, Lance Hernandez, Lannon Booth, Michael Clarke and Evans Everett, all of Lubbock; Kenneth Waggoner of New Deal; and Reiley Smith of Lazbuddie.

Levelland campus participants were Billie York and Lottie Ochoa, both of Lubbock; Ed Shugart of Levelland; Cody “Bear” Neighbors of Brownfield; Chris Bass of Amherst; and Brett Ferguson of Plainview.

The winning Jaws team from Plainview High was comprised of R.A. Nava, Derek Adame and Angel Ybarra. The other Plainview High participants were Aaron Thompson, Angel Ostengen, Grant Ratliff, Taylor McCasland, Nick Arrizola and Daniel Ratliff.

The Brownfield team participants were Colton Drake, Dylan Thompson, Logan McClure, Colton Rogers, Logan Nave, Mitchell Friesen, Bobby Bruns, Josh DeLunna, Austin Christesson, Rodney Warren, Garrett Belser and Jonathan Williamson.

The Electronic and Manufacturing Technologies Program includes the Robotics course as part of the electronics curriculum. Among the concepts introduced range from what is a robot through the construction of a home-made Computer Numerical Control machine. A CNC Machine is a machine that uses a computer to control its motions and associated with milling and cutting machines. Industrial robotics is emphasized throughout the curriculum.

For more information, contact Bill Tackett, instructor in electronics technology at Reese, at (806) 716-2297.
