BUS SERVICE IMPLEMENTED FOR SATURDAY ACADEMIES
Upward Bound has contracted Spartan Transportation to provide bus service to and from Saturday Academies for our students who live outside Levelland. This is a tremendous benefit to our students, and we appreciate the cooperation and courteous service of Spartan in making these arrangements. Our first day of service was for the October Academy, and we would like to assure everyone that the service will be running smoothly and on schedule for the November Academy. Morning buses depart Brownfield, Littlefield and Morton High Schools at 7:30 a.m., and Whitharral and Whiteface High Schools at approximately 7:50 a.m.
Students will be dropped off at their homes unless the address is outside the city limits. In that case, the drop off location will be the high school where parents should plan to pick up their children at approximately 4:00 p.m. In case of bad weather, please contact the Spartan answering service at 894-3800 or 1-800-462-8747. They will provide information regarding any schedule changes.
To ride the bus, each student must submit the Spartan Parental Consent form to the bus driver the first time the student uses the bus service. Spartan drivers will have copies on hand for parents to complete.
OCTOBER ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS
Thirty-one candidates attended the October 2 Academy, many of them completing their sixty-day trial period! Those with completed applications were scheduled for interviews during the month of October. Remember, spaces are limited, so get your application packet in soon. If you are unsure of what you lack, contact the Upward Bound office at 894-9611, ext. 2653.
Activities at the October Academy for seniors included learning habits two and three of the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective College Students” and completing the Texas Common Application for Texas universities. Juniors practiced demonstrating attentiveness versus distraction as they began the “Character First” series. Sophomores and freshmen assessed their personal strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, ninth through eleventh grades participated in study skills sessions devoted to effectively reading a textbook and practicing for the TAKS exam.
PARENT INFORMATION
Thanks to all the parents who attended the Parent Orientation in October. If you were not able to attend, please feel free to contact the Upward Bound office with any questions.
TUTORING SERVICES UNDERWAY
We are pleased to announce that tutoring services sponsored by Upward Bound have begun in the towns that we serve. Upward Bound participants are assigned to tutoring based on their grades, and they may also request a tutor as needed. Students are being contacted on an individual basis to arrange their sessions. Should parents or students have any questions, please contact the Upward Bound office.
SPC UPWARD BOUND SAYS THANK YOU TO . . .
Spartan Transportation for helping establish bus service for our Saturday Academies.
