We will truly miss you all! Good luck in your future college studies! NEW PARTICIPANT OPENINGSUpward Bound has openings for new students. If you have friends you think belong in Upward Bound, give them one of the postcards included with this newsletter and have them return it to us by mail. Coordinators will be visiting the schools soon after school starts, and we'd love to have some new recruits to meet! SUMMER PHOTO CD The photo CD's can be ordered at the September Saturday Academy . Bring $2 to reserve your copy! (Cost is for reimbursement of funds spent to make the CD's. Because of that, reservations will only be taken with payment. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.) SUMMER ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTSUpward Bound summer participants did so many activities this summer it's impossible to list them all here, but we found room to hit the highlights. • Each student attended a minimum of 100 hours of class! As one student said, • Ten students worked at SPC offices and a local business to practice professional skills and to earn extra money. • Students traveled over 700 miles to tour university campuses this summer! They visited Eastern New Mexico University in Portales , New Mexico , the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa , and West Texas A & M University in Canyon. • Participants had their “Reality Checked” along with Texas Tech University Upward Bound students during an activity provided by SPC Tech Prep. • UB students toured the Texas Tech University Wind Research Facility, Cannon Air Force Base, the Panhandle Plains Museum , and the Amarillo Zoo. They also attended the theatrical production “Texas Legacies” and went horseback riding. • Students got to kick back and have some fun with evening activities like Jumbo Twister, Putt-Putt Golf, swimming, movies, basketball, a talent show and a dance. SPC UPWARD BOUND SAYS THANK YOU TO . . . • Everyone at SPC for helping us to coordinate our activities and use campus facilities. We send special thanks to: Stan Weatherred and Terri Wright in Student Activities, John Wuerflein with Campus Security, Dee Dee Odorizzi at the Fitness Center, Mike Harrison at the Natatorium, Sarah Allen with Tech Prep and everyone at Great Western Dining. • The excellent summer instructors who made their classes challenging and fun: Joe Bullock, Dr. Laura Graves, Sheyleah Harris, Elizabeth Holder, Robert Plant, III, Jon Townsend, Kathryn Townsend and Charlotte Young • Putt-Putt Golf and Games in Lubbock for providing students with a free attraction of their choice. • Our summer internship supervisors who gave our students real work experience: SPC Enrollment Management office, SPC College Relations, SPC IT Department, SPC Counseling Center, SPC Financial Aid, SPC Admissions office, and Anna Ricker's Law office • Our awesome and fun resident assistants : Richard Kasika, Ashley McNeely, Gloria Rangel, Sasha Rolle and Juan Villanueva • And to the best dorm mom ever , Helen Daniels
