WE’VE GOT YOUR BACKThree backpacks were collected for the “We’ve Got Your Back” campaign. Great job! The supplies and backpacks are great, and the personalized notes to the backpack recipients are especially meaningful. NOVEMBER ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTSUpward Bound welcomed twelve candidates to the November Academy. Candidates are reminded to complete their applications so that their interviews can be scheduled. Questions? Call the UB office for more information. Seniors and juniors welcomed Glenda Hensley from the SPC Financial Aid office. Mrs. Hensley introduced participants to the financial aid process. UB Seniors also welcomed Ramesh Krishnan who explained how to write an award winning scholarship application. Additionally, seniors had time to continue filling out their college admissions and scholarship applications. All other UB students continued practicing for the TAKS test utilizing the Incredible Tutor software that allows them to practice topics that are individualized to their needs. Students also explored career and college interest activities with Discover software. Juniors reviewed their ACT registration packets and were instructed to complete and return them at the December Academy. The test date they are registering for is Feb. 11, 2006. Congratulations to the juniors who were able to take the PSAT in October. All others will register in the Spring to take the SAT. Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens sessions were conducted for first and second year students. The first year students (currently the ninth and tenth grade students) learned about paradigms. The second year students (currently the eleventh grade students) explored the benefits of practicing win-win thinking . DID YOU KNOW?As explained in the last newsletter, Upward Bound has program objectives that are designed to make our students more successful and to maintain funding. SPC UB has an objective that focuses on students staying in the program. The SPC UB curriculum is designed with the intention that students will participate for three to four years. By staying in Upward Bound through high school graduation, students get the maximum benefit from the program. (Questions for this section may be sent by email to UpwardBound@southplainscollege.edu) DIRECTOR’S NOTEI announced at the November Academy that I had accepted another job in Lubbock. I expressed to the students how much I have enjoyed working with them and that I will miss them very much. I am also very thankful for the work the students put into being in Upward Bound. Thanks, also, to the parents for supporting their children’s efforts. Chris Riley has been selected as the new director. I am very pleased that he will take over as director, and I am confident he will do an excellent job. SPC UPWARD BOUND SAYS THANK YOU TO . . . All the UB students for their donations to the “We’ve Got Your Back Campaign.”
