SATURDAY BUS SERVICE

Morning buses depart Brownfield, Littlefield and Morton High Schools at 7:30 a.m., and Whitharral and Whiteface High Schools at approximately 7:45 a.m . for Saturday Academy bus service. Seats are reserved for participants first, then as space allows candidates may also ride. Candidates need to call the UB office a week before every Saturday Academy to request seating.

OCTOBER ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS

Upward Bound welcomed eighteen candidates to the October Academy. We are glad they attended, and we hope they return. It’s not too late for other interested students to begin the application process. Call the UB office for more information.

UB Seniors began filling out their college admissions and scholarship applications. During the test prep session, Seniors practiced for the ACT by reviewing writing samples and completing a timed writing. They also received fee waivers to register for the SAT. Seniors who take the SAT on Dec. 3 will be excused from the December Academy (also set for Dec.3).

All other UB students continued practicing for the TAKS test utilizing the Incredible Tutor software that allows them to practice topics that are individualized to their needs. Students also explored career and college interest activities with Discover software.

Juniors received ACT registration packets that are to be completed as homework and returned at the November Academy. The test date they are registering for is Feb. 11, 2006. The Juniors were also encouraged to take the PSAT at their schools in October.

Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens sessions were conducted for first and second year students. The first year students (currently the ninth and tenth grade students) learned the foundational principles. The second year students (currently the eleventh grade students) learned what constitutes deposits and withdrawals in relationship bank accounts.

DID YOU KNOW?

As explained in the last newsletter, Upward Bound is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The services SPC UB provides are designed to meet program objectives. Meeting objectives makes our students more successful and maintains funding.

SPC UB has one objective dedicated to participants improving their grade point averages every year. That’s why we provide academic tutoring throughout the year and academic classes during the summer program.
