POLICY CHANGES

Updated student policy manuals were given to students at the September meeting. Parents and students should review the manuals together, paying particular attention to revisions made to the “Absences” section (pp. 3-5) and the supplemental policies (Stipends and Academic Advancement). Students and parents need to sign and return the agreement forms. Feel free to call any Upward Bound Staff member should you have questions.

TUTORING SERVICES UNDERWAY

UB is pleased to announce that Littlefield and Morton have increased UB access to school facilities for after-school tutoring. UB greatly appreciates this and extends a heartfelt thanks to the counselors, principals and vice-principals who made this happen.

Some students have already requested tutors—way to be proactive!! Progress reports are currently being processed to make assignments to those students whose grades reflect the need. Students are being contacted on an individual basis to arrange their sessions. Should parents or students have any questions, please contact Jorge Zamora at 894-9611, ext. 2964.

SATURDAY BUS SERVICE

Upward Bound has contracted Spartan Transportation again this year to provide bus service to and from Saturday Academies for our students who live outside Levelland. This is a tremendous benefit to our students, and we appreciate the cooperation and courteous service of Spartan in making these arrangements. UB strongly encourages students to take advantage of the bus service, as we constantly monitor that enough students use the service to justify the expense.

Morning buses depart Brownfield, Littlefield and Morton High Schools at 7:30 a.m., and Whitharral and Whiteface High Schools at approximately 7:45 a.m .

Students will be dropped off at their homes unless the address is outside the city limits. In that case, the drop off location will be the high school where parents should plan to pick up their children at approximately 4:00 p.m. In case of bad weather, please contact the Spartan answering service at 894-3800 or 1-800-462-8747. They will provide information regarding any schedule changes.

To ride the bus, each student must submit the Spartan Parental Consent form to the bus driver the first time the student uses the bus service. Spartan drivers will have copies on hand for parents to complete. Students who used the bus service last year do not need to complete new forms.

SEPTEMBER ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS

Upward Bound got off to a great start for the 2005-2006 school year! Participants updated needs assessments and took Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) pretests that will determine their TAKS assignments. Seniors registered to take the ACT on October 22, 2005.

Students also enjoyed a trip to the Cowboy Symposium and Native American Pow-Wow in Lubbock. As always, the students had excellent behavior and were wonderful representatives of the South Plains College Upward Bound Program.

DID YOU KNOW?

(This is a new section that will be included in every newsletter. The purpose is to further educate participants and parents about Upward Bound.Questions may be sent by email to UpwardBound@southplainscollege.edu)

Upward Bound is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The services SPC UB provides are designed to meet program objectives. Meeting objectives makes our students more successful and maintains funding. For example, one program objective is that participants meet TAKS standards in English, Math and Science every year. That’s why we provide TAKS tutoring throughout the year.

SPC UPWARD BOUND SAYS THANK YOU TO . . .

Target school counselors, principals and vice-principals for all they do to help SPC UB. They assist us in scheduling student meetings and tutoring sessions at their schools. They also facilitate information that we must provide the Department of Education. Without their cooperation, Upward Bound’s student services would be severely limited.

Spartan Transportation for contracting bus service for our Saturday Academies. Thanks for consistently providing courteous, reliable service!
