The Welding Technology Program at South Plains College is designed to produce graduates that have acquired skills and technical knowledge of the welding and metal fabrication industry.  Students in the program study and practice the most common welding and cutting processes and procedures used in industry including:

  • Safety in welding

  • Oxy-fuel welding, brazing and cutting

  • Plasma arc cutting

  • Air carbon arc gouging

  • Shielded metal arc (stick) welding

  • Gas metal arc (mig) welding

  • Flux cored arc welding

  • Gas tungsten arc (tig/'Heliarc") welding

  • Layout and fabrication of sheet metal, plate, structural shapes, and pipe

  • Pipe layout, fitting, and fabrication

  • Welding metallurgy

  • Weldability of metals

  • Blueprint reading and welding symbols

  • Welding codes, standards, and specifications

  • Welding Inspection, including destructive and non-destructive testing

Before completion of the course, students are required to take the American Welding Society Entry Level Welder and Advanced Welder qualification tests. These are hands-on and written tests designed to comprehensively test the skills of the student before graduation.
